Microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. (1). Louis pasteur and Robert koch are often considered to be the founders of Medical microbiology: “[which] deals with the study of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites [that] are of medical importance and are capable of causing diseases in human beings. “
The german physician Robert Koch is best known for his contributions to the “germ theory of disease” which proves that specific diseases were caused by specific pathogenic microorganisms. Koch was one of the first scientists to focus on the isolation of bacteria in pure culture. “Koch’s Postulates” was formulated by Robert Koch and german bacteriologist Friedrich Loeffler in 1884. It includes the series of criteria used in order to isolate specific pathogenic microorganisms. (3)
In 1923, an American Microbiologist, David Hendricks Bergey published the “Bergey’s manual of systematic Bacteriology” or simply “Bergey’s Manual.” This manual is the main resource for determining the identity of the pure and isolated bacteria and to classify them based on their structural and functional attributes. (4)
In a recent sampling procedure, the human skin was swabbed for identification of an unknown bacterium. Two methods were used; “Bergey’s Manual” and sterile techniques.
Materials and tests performed include; general nutrient medium, TSA plate isolation streak, Gram stain and spore stain of organisms, general characterization tests, and specialized tests.
After collecting all information, a specific bacterium was determined to be of normal flora of the human skin.
There are three areas used to identify the unknown bacterial organism: Morphological characteristics, cultural characteristics, and biochemical tests. 1) an initial sampling was done on the human skin, using a cotton tip sterile swab. 2)... [continues]
