This paper will address and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of university rankings. The paper will first examine what university rankings are, their significance, advantages and disadvantages of attending a higher ranking university or non-high ranking institute, as well as their relation to student performance. According to The Guardian (2013) the world's top university, by ranking is Harvard University. Third place goes to The University of Cambridge and fourth place to The University of Oxford, both of which are in England. University rankings are monitored and administered by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). The following aspects are considered in order to rank a university appropriately: Academic peer review (40%), Faculty student ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), Recruiter review (10%) International orientation (10%) and Tuition fees. (QS, 2013) Academic peer review is used to find out how they are perceived by other universities the faculty student ratio is used to determine the commitment of the university to the quality of the students. Citations are used to see how much research is undertaken by the universities, recruiter reviews are used to see how many students are recruited from a specific university, international orientation is used to see how global a university is and fees help determine the market placement of the university. For example, ivy league universities charge higher fees, as they want to attract wealthier students. (QS, 2013) Arguably, the system has come under a lot of criticism, as many scholars and prominent lecturers state that universities may focus heavily on gaining a high rank, as opposed to focusing on the quality of students. On the other hand, many believe that the QS ranking allows acknowledgement of several university attributes. Including the quality of its research, research training, teaching and employability. (QS, 2013) The advantages of studying at a high ranking ivy league university can include better job opportunities, a better education, and connections with the elite. High ranking universities are often attended by the wealthy, and aristocracy. The biggest disadvantage of this is that it often comes with a hefty price. Other advantages include more resources, better paid teachers who have more time for the students, and higher budgets are available for research and development. (QS, 2012) Increased competition for high salary positions after graduation creates pressure in the world market for just a few positions, but a large number of candidates. As a result, it could be stated that having an education from a well know university can offer the opportunity to more doors and possibilities. However, Career Builder (2013) states that: “Employers prefer non-ivy league students, as they often tend to value the job better and stay for longer, as opposed to ivy league candidates.” The advantages of attending a non-ivy league or higher ranking university are that students can also receive an excellent education, and if students work hard, students have all the resources and opportunities in order to receive an excellent grade, and have excellent post-graduate prospects. The tuition fees for non-high ranking universities are also much lower in terms of higher ranking or ivy league universities, as a result, a higher level of education is much more affordable and attainable for everyone, as opposed to just the wealthy. (QS, 2013) The disadvantages could be that the reputation of the university may not be as well known as higher ranking ones, therefore students may not have their job applications looked at as
