Discrimination is the process of identifying that someone is different and, due to this difference, treating them unfairly (Thompson, 2006). Xenoracism is discrimination that is aimed at people specifically because they are from a different country, and are therefore ‘strangers’ (Sivanandan, 2001:2). Oppression is the hardship faced by a group due to the dominance of another group and their discriminatory actions. There is often an imbalance of power between the groups, and the dominant group may ‘disregard the rights’ of the non-dominant group (Thompson, 2006:40).…

The idea of equality becomes blocked in a prejudiced society. The daily lives of the majority of the population become a struggle. Unfortunately, in most cases prejudice results in the deprivation of rights. In the past, people have been denied basic education, employment, the right to vote, etc. Though unjustifiable, this case is quite common and affects many people every single day.…

In my opinion, discrimination, stereotyping and prejudice are very similar; they often overlap and can easily be mistaken for one another. Prejudice is defined as preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013) or a preconceived judgment or opinion, an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge, an instance of such judgment or opinion, an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics. (Merriam-Webster, 2013). Stereotyping is defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013) I would say they differ because both Prejudice and Stereotyping are opinions or ideas based on unjust opinions, ideas or unreliable generalizations about a person or group whereas Discrimination is when a person or group uses prejudice or stereotypes in taking action by denying equal rights and opportunities to these individuals and groups. So, in short prejudice and stereotypes are negative attitudes, opinions and ideas and discrimination would be to take these feelings into actions.…

Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for any other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping in the sense that it is the act of excluding groups to privileges based on prejudice and stereotypes. Prejudice refers to the negative judgments or thoughts about a group or individual. They are formed without thought or knowledge and are often passed down through the family. Stereotyping is a negative generalization about a group. For example all black people are thugs or priests are child molesters.…
