This ten chapter book can be divided into two major sections. In the first five chapters, Jenkins traces the historical growth of Christianity in the global South to its current relative boom status. Jenkins provides a short history of Western Christianity, noting that it found its Western foundation during the post-Constantine days of Rome, and soon after fused with European culture. Jenkins does give a nod to the fact that, in the beginning, Christianity was a new faith that was a blend of both Jewish and Greek expressions. The gospel spread throughout the Roman provinces east to China and India, north and west to Europe, and south to Africa. Although there was a multi-continent spread of Christianity, Jenkins points out that “Christianity for its first thousand years was stronger in Asia and North Africa than in Europe and only after about 1400 did Europe (and Europeanized North America) decisively become the new Christian heartland.”[3]…

Confucianism and Daoism are two of the most influential schools of thought in ancient China. Both are not only ways of thinking, but ways of life. They are not religions: they have no teaching of worship of gods, or the afterlife; each philosophy focuses on the individual and their behavior. Confucianism and Daoism are often considered polar opposites for several reasons, although they have a few similarities.…

There are only a few religions that can claim the adherence of large numbers of people. Geographers distinguish two types of religion: universalizing and ethnic. Universalizing religions attempt to become global, and appeal to all people, regardless of where they may live in the world, not just to those of one culture or location. An ethnic religion appeals primarily to one group of people living in a single place. “About sixty two percent of the world’s population adheres to a universalizing religion, twenty four to an ethnic religion, and fourteen percent to no religion”. The three main universalizing religions are Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. “Each of the three branches is divided into branches, denominations and sects. A branch is a large and fundamental division within a religion. A denomination is a division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body. A sect is a relatively small group that has broken away from an established denomination”. Christianity has two billion followers and has the most widespread distribution. It is the predominant religion in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia (countries with a Christian majority exist in Africa and Asia as well). “Christianity has three major branches: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox. Roman Catholics comprise 53 percent of the world’s Christians, Protestants 21 percent, and Eastern Orthodox 10 percent”. Roman Catholicism is the dominant Christian branch within Europe. The Eastern Orthodox branch of Christianity is a collection of fourteen self-governing churches in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Roman Catholics make up ninety three percent of Christians in Latin America, compared with twenty nine percent in North America. “Within North America, Roman Catholics are clustered in the southwestern and northwestern United States and the Canadian province of Quebec”. Islam is the religion of 1.3 billion people, and is the…

All religions are very specific with the details which set that religion apart from others. However, when all the little details are melted away, there are only a mere handful that are different in essence. When looked at closely, even the religions which are perceived completely dissimilar at first glance are surprisingly similar. For example, the Voodoo religion, and that of early Christianity are stereotyped as extremely different, but with closer inspection, not only are these two religions are very obviously similar, but Voodooism stemmed, partly, out of Christianity. Both religions revolve around a mortal individual being used as a mouthpiece by a higher, being, be it spirit or god, to communicate with our mortal world. Yet at the same time, each religion has taken it's own path and although equivalent in essence, have very different aspects with respect to background (such as time and status), as well as publicity, and language.…
