- Imperialism = expanding of an empire
- Isolationism = Isolate yourself. Don't want anything to do with the changes or whats going on. - Why we chose policies? = We now have an industrial society so Exporting is needed. - (we wanted trade with China) We have most trade with Japan (1940's) - Why trade with China? Sell our goods, We want natural sources that we don't have, [Economy pushes us to imperialism. Main reason] - Main reason of why we're in the mideast? - Oil

D. The lure of Hawaii and Samoa
- We've been interested in Hawaii since 19th century
- Convenient stopping place for far eastern trade.
- Sugar. Sugar. Sugar. Sugar!
- Christian missionaries were the first settled groups in Hawaii - What made us even more interested in taking control over hawaii? - Control sugar comp. - Pass a law. [two cents a pound] Hawaiian sugar industries did not like that! So hawaii decided they wanted to become part of American sugar comp's. - Other reason of why we're interested in Hawaii? - We wanted to suit ourselves as a national power. - Big three noble powers? -

- We end up annexing hawaii.
: they tried to go to war with us, did not like us taking over them but they couldn't fight. Where would they get weapons? Their not big enough. - - To protect our interest in trade
- At end of decade we end up with? - The Philippines
- Philippines - they are economically very important in the trade area. [Spain was full of Philippines]
