Unit 4 Culminating Activity Racism
Unit 4: Culminating Activity
Racism

Racism is something we've all witnessed and in my opinion is one of the most disgusting and pointless hate crimes out there, and there are quite a lot of hate crimes (Anti-Semitism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Religious Hate, and more.) Race was created socially, primarily by how people perceive ideas and faces we are not quite used to. Racism is basically just a label that has been put on “us” and “them” or “me” (generally speaking) and “you”. Now no one really knows why or how racism all started but are many different beliefs as to why it did, for example some people have what is called “Xenophobia” which is the fear of people who are in anyway different. Another belief is the need to feel “OK” or to feel worthwhile this leads to people trying to feel superior over others by putting them down or being racist towards them. One more reason as to why racism all started is because people learned to conceal fear with racism. Many people react with fear towards those who look or come across different to them. But instead of showing fear or that they are afraid they use racial comments or racial slurs. Anyways I could go on and on about the reasons it all started but why not starting coming up with solutions on how we can get it all to come to an end so we can all live peacefully and equally and without being judged for the color of our skin or where we come from or what we eat, etc.
The first solution that I have is to make sure its known by everybody if I can, I would start a huge rally at my school and just make it known around the city and hopefully have the news media show up and have it broadcasted. Having racism put out so everywhere knows about it could help because maybe once people see how bad racism really and how badly it can affect people they might start doing more to help put an end to it. Another solution I have is to email or write letters to the City Council or even to the Prime Minister and try to see if he can pass a new right about stating your opinion, that you have the right to state your opinion unless it is offensive or abusive towards others.
I’ll give one more of my ideas of how to possibly stop racism or at least help to stop it. The third way to help is to create a large petition to stop racism all together, just be done with it and print multiple copies and have them placed all over the city, at every location that allows me to me. For example try and put some at coffee shops (like Starbucks, or Williams Fresh Café), libraries (London public library near Masonville Mall), even put them in stores around Masonville Mall, or public service buildings (like Police Station, Fire stations, Hospitals). Hopefully putting out a petition for people to sign will help because again its bringing attention to Racism and the affect it has, and if more people sign it, it shows that people are actually interested in bringing this horrible, disgusting thing to an end much like I am. I think that using this solution is best suitable because it doesn’t only bring the attention to racism it also tells the victims of racism and discrimination that someone (and the people who sign the petition) are there for them and that they don’t stand alone, it physically shows the victims how many people are there for them by the number of signatures there are on the petition.
So if you’ve being affected by racism or discrimination, join the fight and sign a petition, or join an organization like “Racism. It Stops With Me, or YMCA Stand Against Racism™, and many more. Stand with the many others affected by racism and help put it to an end!

Racism is a very strong word. To many people, it means many different things. The actual definition is when a person or group of people feels superior to another because of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or simply who they are. So pretty much what makes a person human. Every since the Americans first brought over the slaves from Africa, racism has been a problem. Since the 1930s, after the Civil War, racism still exist in North America, and in the most awful ways possible. From there, racism has changed greatly. It is difficult to say whether or not that change has been good or bad, but just the fact that it has changed should be enough. Racism is a touchy subject that has been major issue ever since its initial startup. Racism is the hatred towards a person or population of a certain race. The United States has taken huge leaps in equality, but there is still a long ways away from completion. Racism has always existed in America. When the nation was in its younger years, people owned people. People of the African American descent were considered property under the eyes of the law. How insane is that? Progress was made since then, but racism has only evolved. In the 1950s, whites and blacks were segregated to the point where they could not go to the same schools or even use the same bathrooms. Throughout A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry criticizes the state Of America…

I believe that everyone is a human and that we should not be dehumanized because of what race society categorizes us to be. It will also let them learn about different cultures and how they were treated in the past. The students will learn how to tolerate and respect people who are different from themselves.
