K3D287. In all settings there will be times where you will have to adapt your practice to meet all children’s needs in all activities, even at meal times. When working it is important to treat all children the same but at the same time remember that every child is an individual. When planning activities it is best to take into account the age range and ability of every child in your group, for example it is not advised to plan a hand-eye coordination activity like throwing and catching for an 18 month old child where as planning it for a pre-school child would be an enjoyable activity for them. When it comes to meal times you must also think about every child as children with cultural and religious views may have dietary needs which you have to adhere to.
K3D288. Developing skills as a child is very important. There are many activities that children can do to develop their skills from something as little as pushing and pulling toys to something as big as climbing up a flight of stairs or climbing frame. Every activity a child does either indoor or outdoor will develop a skill. These skills are Balance and coordination, gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These activities could include Indoor – Jigsaws and puzzles
- threading wooden beads
- water toys and sand
- Junk modelling
- Playing with tea sets
Outdoor – Riding bikes/tricycles
- swimming or gymnastics
- dancing or moving to music
- climbing equipment
- bat and ball games
- Hoops – hula hoop or rolling hoops
- Pushing and pulling equpiment
K3D289. There are many cases in which you may have to change or adapt your planned activities. For example if you have planned an outside activity that was going to take up most of your morning and then the weather changes and you can no longer take your children outside you would have to then do an indoor activity. In some cases you may not have to change the activity that much as it may be easy to just make space indoors and adapt the activity to your setting. Another reason you may have to change your activity is if it is proving to challenging for the children or if there are accidents resulting from the planned activity.
K3D292. Encouraging children to extend their range of skills can sometimes be quite challenging. Most children like to feel safe and secure just doing what they know they can do. Ways to bring children out of their shell and encourage them to try new things can be approached from a number of ways such as - been a good role model – children always enjoy watching adults take part in activities and it always encourages the child more to want to join in with the adult whatever the activity may be. - Choose suitable activities. – If the activity you choose is unsuitable for the children you are caring for then they are more unlikely to get the confidence to try it - Choose team games – don’t choose games that involve only 1 or 2 of the children in the group. Games such as “Duck Duck goose or “What’s the time Mr. wolf” that can include the whole group would be good examples - Praise the children – At the stage when the child/children has gained the confidence to try a new activity always remember to heap praise and use positive words towards the child/group. This will make the child feel as though they have accomplished something really great and will make them want to keep on trying the new activity they have just learnt.
K3D293. There are many ways of giving the children time to rest and recover from physical activity. These are important as the child may have been running around most of the morning and will be feeling the effects that this has had so the body needs time to recuperate. There are a few ways of letting children relax and recover. These are. - Sleep times
