There are many different things in place to safeguard children and young people. These include:
The Children Act 1989
The above act recognises the responsibilities of parents and any professionals who come into contact with children to ensure their safety. There is two main points with the act that focus on child protection. In Section 17 it states that ‘services must be put into place to safeguard and promote the welfare of children within the area who are in need’. Section 47 states that the Local Authority has ‘a duty to investigate when there is a reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering, or likely to suffer significant harm’.
The Education Act 2002
The education act lays down the responsibilities of local education authorities, governing bodies, head teachers and anybody else working within a school to make sure that all the children within are safe and free from harm.
Children Act 2004
The children’s act provides the legal framework for Every Child matters. It includes the need for:
• All services relating to children to work closer together to form an integrated service
• A shared database of information that is relevant to the safety and welfare of children
• A way of giving earlier support for parents who are experiencing problems
There will also be policies within the local authority and the school which are there to ensure the safety, security and well being of the children.
