Communication
What is communication and how is it important to team leadership?
Communication is the activity of conveying information though the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information as by speech, visuals, signals, writing or behaviors. (CITE)
Communication is one of the most necessary components of leadership, without communication there would be no teams, nobody would know what their role on the team would be, there would be no procedures to go by for the team, and there would be no launching of the team, so the team would never exist.
I believe you get the point, that communication is one of the most important issues related to team leadership. When communication exists there can be poor communication and there can be great communication.
When developing a plan for team communication, there must be multiple ways for team members to get a hold of one another in case one way fails, preventing part of the team to get into contact with the remainder of the team members. This happens when there is a power outage in one part of the country, leaving no internet access. An alternative option would be the use of the telephone and having a conference call to keep the team member who is without power to be able to keep participating with the other team members (Jarvenpaa & Leidner, 2006)
I believe that communication is important because without an effect communication plan in place the team would not be able to function and meet their ultimate goal of being successful.

This paper introduces an approach to effectively communicate within a global virtual team by discussing the challenges faced by them, understanding cultural differences in communicating, diversity within a team, building trust in virtual communication, and communicating across different regions and time zones. This approach appears in many discussions surrounding the difficulties managers and team members have in communicating effectively in global virtual teams. Specifically, this paper evaluates how the diversity of a global virtual team makes it challenging to communicate when members are not present face to face and adhering to the different regions and time zones these members are located. It will also examine the challenges in understanding the different cultures amongst a team and how to effectively build trust by researching, acknowledging, and understanding these cultural differences and communicating them to the team in a virtual environment.…

    Team Communication

A major obstacle for team members is the lack of basic communication. Without communication team success is highly unlikely. Interaction is important, as it shows how team members work together to accomplish tasks and perform effectively. Communication is especially important to coordinate and cooperate with other team members to achieve collective goals. "Being an effective team player calls for frequent and extensive communication" (Hughes, 2003, p. 22). Once individuals recognize the importance of communication, they become aware of how successful communication can be. "Skillful communicators think like mediators, focused on mutually desirable outcomes as opposed to winning at all costs. Relationships are important to them, and they recognize the need to tailor their comments to the listener in order to be heard" (McCarthy, 2007, p. 6). Members should actively communicate and encourage each member to participate. Every member of the team should also be allowed to state their ideas, give suggestions and express their opinions. This allows every one to engage in open discussion. Valuing each others differences and viewpoints allows every one to feel part of the team. In turn, members believe they are a valuable member and can contribute to the team 's task. "Members contribute to the success of the team by using their unique skills and talents" (Bragg, 1999, ¶ 6). Once ideas are presented and individual skills are identified, the team can establish each member 's role and individual tasks. Team members can work on tasks and communicated…

It's the leader's job to point people in the right direction with clear, coherent, and consistent communication designed and planned thoughtfully and in advance. The leader of today thus has to lead with a clear direction in mind, and at the same time, ensure that the rest of the team understands which direction they are going. It is only when the whole entire team, together with the leader are working towards a common goal and final destination that success can really be achieved. Communication is thus essential because leaders must be able to communicate the goals and directions to the team other than being able to define it. Finally, they must communicate in such a way that the team will be inspired and motivated to take action.…

In any team, communication plays a vital role for the team to survive and succeed. Without communication, the team will not accomplish anything as a whole. Communication is a critical element in the Emergency Response Team (ERT) system. Many organizations use an ERT system; to act in times of crisis, or for daily work related injury or personal illness issues. For an Emergency Response Team to work effectively, each member needs to be able to keep constant contact with each member of their segment as well as their commanding officers. ERT members need to be well trained and know their functions in the team, and make sure they follow through with their duties.…

Globalization of operations, reduced time to market, increased need to respond quickly to customers’ needs worldwide and reduced cost of operations have encouraged many business organizations to adopt global virtual teams for their business activities. In this study, we explore a comprehensive model consisting of different variables that impact performance of such global virtual teams and validate it through an exploratory experiment conducted in an academic setting. Preliminary analysis indicates that trust between team members and communication effectiveness of the teams has significant positive correlation with the success of virtual team projects. Moreover, the participants perceived the virtual team project success positively. They also were positively oriented about their learning from participating in such virtual team projects. Motivation of team members is highly correlated with team members’ learning effectiveness. Implications of these findings for businesses and curriculum development are discussed.
