|Unit |Criteria | | |11 |6.4 |Explain ways of empowering children and young people to make positive and informed choices that support their well | | | |being and safety. | | | | | | | |To help children and young people make positive and informed choices to support their safety and well being, I believe | | | |you need to:- | | | | | | | |Help and teach them what behaviour is acceptable and what is not, towards others and towards them, in our society. | | | |Help and teach them how to develop awareness (resilience). | | | |Explain risk and consequence. | | | |Allow them to take risks in a safe environment. | | | |Help and support them to achieve a positive self image and confidence. | | | |Inform them that they have a right to be safe and teach them what to do if they don’t feel so. | | | |Inform them of organisations that exist to protect them e.g. NSPCC, Kidscape. | | | | | | | |There are many areas in which to empower children and young people e.g. road safety, abuse, bullying, at home, | | | |abduction, at play. A few have which I have expanded upon :- | | | | | | | |Abuse - any child or young person is vulnerable. You should teach a child or young person:- | | | | | | | |Explain sexual abuse and what is affectionate touching and what is not. | | | |That public places such as parks, playgrounds, hanging about outside shopping centres and school playgrounds would be | | | |classed as favourite haunts of child molesters. | | | |Don’t believe anyone who says they’ve been sent by parents. | | | |When playing in a park or playground always be with friends and not alone. |
