Understanding Leadership

As a small business owner, I took this class to help me understand the difference in leading and being a leader. This will help people to fully understand the characteristics of a leader, and which style’s work best while interacting with employees. So far Kurt Lewin has been the best resource for information on leadership styles. Knowledge gained from Kurt Lewin leadership styles will not only help business owners, also vary useful for employees too. Understanding your manager’s leadership style, a person could anticipate future judgment and be helpful by being prepared.

After looking over a few definitions of leader and leading. I have come to understand that leading and being a leader are similar in ways but very different. A person could say all cars are similar, but a Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger are very different. While a person is leading others, the people following have a very strong choice of following or not. On the other hand a person who is a leader, in a way would not be known for having followers but for leading through authoritative status like a manager or CEO ext. So Martin Luther King was known for leading and being followed by people, and Bill Gates was known for being a leader through authority from being a corporation owner.

When I was twenty years old I landed a job selling cars for Chrysler Jeep and Dodge. The showroom floor manager Austin Due was my manager. The way he worked was very different from other managers. He always involves other employees in his decision making on the floor. Some of the other manager made decision based on their experience and judgment, only that they though were reasonable. Austin shows the characteristics of a democratic leader, through involvement with employee.
