SCENARIO 1: Group of 4 female friends

-ladies get together catching up on their lives and families and what their future plans are. -they were quite interested in what each of them had to say and accepting of each other.

One of the ladies I noticed though always seemed to be on the outside of the group. This person seemed very reserved and just went with the flow. She never seemed to be as involved with the group as the other three were with each other. I found that she preferred to listen to more of what was going on with the others.

At one stage there was a pause and one of the friends spoke to this quiet person as almost as if to invite her to join in with the conversation. This person almost seemed embarrassed that she was being taken notice of and tried again to move the conversation away from her. Within a matter of moments the conversation was again turned to the rest of the group.

MY OBSERVATION: The girls were trying to get their friend involved in the conversation and were keen to know what this friend had to share. (they were all looking straight at her) though this friend was trying very hard to turn the conversation back to the group. When being confronted this lady seemed a bit hostile and defensive (with a look on her face as to say, ‘how dare you ask me anything’) almost as if she was too embarrassed to speak about herself or her family. While watching this I got the impression that this lady in a way felt that she was not good enough or had a high enough standard to mix with the group. She seemed to be unsettled with the group and was just waiting for a chance to get away as she distanced herself from the others.

SCENARIO 2: Couple’s Date

A couple walk into the coffee shop in deep conversation. Obviously they are quite comfortable with each other. They choose to sit at a table in the far corner. Sitting opposite each other with their knees just about touching the others.

Other than being interrupted by the waiter, they order their food and carry on with their discussion. While doing this, the couple’s gaze was fixated on each other, not too aware of what was going on around them. They really must have a lot to share with each other.

This gentleman then leaned over the table and whispered something to this lady who all of a sudden her facial expression changed into a grin and her whole face turned blood red. She was blushing and moved back into the seat with her back against the chair. A few moments went by and she excused herself and went to the bathroom.

When she came back they had their meal as their conversation eased off to eat. Through the meal they were looking at each other and the lady looked away into my direction with a smile on her face. They finished their meal and left.

MY OBSERVATION:
This couple were very comfortable with each other and engaged in eye contact for the majority of the time that...
