I am here to speak to you about gay marriage. I believe it starts with eliminating homophobia and realizing the homosexual community is just like us. They can talk, work as hard, be as family oriented, and love someone just as much as any heterosexual. This is of course a near impossible task it seems, and if it gets done it’s only through time we will see change. However, if you are with me on this argument you can help this be a faster wide spread of acceptance.
I know there people, probably in this room that don’t agree with me, whatever your reasons are I hope I can answer some questions that may be lingering in your head. Homophobia is in all of us, why because it’s not the norm most of us grew up with. Some of us as we grow up we get over the difference and say to ourselves that it doesn’t matter and why should it? Some people have overcome it already, actually quite a few. Now for those of you have overcome it, let me explain to you what goes through a homophobia’s head. Most homophobias are in fact men but that’s just most not all. Straight men are raised in there peer groups that it is manly to sleep with as many girls as they can, while not every guy feels like this, they have encountered this in high school, college, or in peer groups where an individual talks about how many girls he’s slept with or a male who has been with a girl for a long period of time may be asked by a single man “hey when are you going to change it up a bit”. These men who act this way are more often than not terrified of homosexuals. They do not hate them. They are afraid and they won’t admit it. Why? Because they are a threat to their manhood. These men literally feel as though every gay man is undressing them with their eyes and is going to do whatever it takes to get them in bed. Most of us know it’s not true, but there really are people who believe this. How do we fix it? We need to make people aware.
