Capstone Proposal Summary
My Capstone Project is about Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (WDS). W DS is a service, installed on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2, which allows administrators to dep loy Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and 7 to multiple client c omputers, using network-based installation. WDS can also be used to deploy applications while the system is being imaged.

This project will accomplish the following:

Installing and Configuring W indows Server 2008 including Active Directory

Imaging client machine using WDS

I have worked for the Metro Nashville Public Schools, for 3 years now , however, I have been in the IT field for about 15 years; I owned my own computer repair business and was the network administrator for a local ISP, and now a technology support specialist.

The school district has 140 schools, broke down into 12 high school clusters . We have different departments in the IT department. ISG (Infrastructure Support Group) manages our internal and external network, SSG (Server Support Group) is responsible for our Servers throughout the district, SPG (Special Projects Group) develops our base image and works with our software vendors, and FSS (Field Support Specialist) manages site network and computers. I s ervice four of those schools , one middle school and three elementary schools on a daily basis. Each of those four schools has a Microsoft Server that will house WDS. There is about 1600 c omputers and laptops spread across th ose four schools, all running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. school years, we are seeing more technology being deployed to each school. We are estimating that by the 2011- 2012 school year, the count for computers and laptops will go up to 2000 just in my schools. That is 400 more that will need to be imaged and deployed in the summer of 2011. At the beginning of the school year we signed a C ampus Agreement with Mic rosoft, that gives us the access to the software that we need. At the current time, we are using Microsoft Server 2003 for all servers. We are in the process of upgrading all servers to Microsoft Windows 2008 Servers and clients to Microsoft Windows 7. W indows 7 will be used on machines that will support it; the computers that cannot run Microsoft Windows 7 will get Microsoft Windows XP Professional put back on them. Right now, we are using Symantec Ghost to deploy all Master Images. G host casting is the process of pushing the image out to a single (unicast) or multiple (multicast) computer s.

Our images have the Microsoft Windows Setup Wizard enabl e for post Windows software installation. H ow we get our custom images at present time. First , MNPS...
