TV shows can range from cartoons to reality and fiction, which makes a huge gap in between the three genres. Although all of the television shows I chose are on premium channels, they all differ in every way. HBO and SHOWTIME offer more realistic shows, but when comparing you won't get a lot of results. Dexter, which premiers on SHOWTIME, is a television show about a young man who works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. He was adopted by a police Sergeant, father after being left in a storage locker with his older sibling, crying in a pool of his mother’s blood after she had been brutally murdered with a chain saw. The older sibling unfortunately grew too emotionally attached to the situation and was sent to a mental hospital for most of his life. Dexter however, was lucky enough to be that young and get adopted into an understanding family. As Dexter grows up, he finds himself enjoying killing small animals and his father thankfully notices this peculiar behavior. When explaining to his after why he does this, he explains this dark urge he has for killing things. They then talk things out and create some sort of code for Dexter to follow to control himself and not get caught in the acts. As Dexter keeps growing older, his urges do also, moving on to killing humans, but taking the law into his own hands and only killing those who deserve to be put down in his mind, such as rapists and murderers that the police haven't found yet. This series is all about him growing as a person and still killing people, but following his father’s lifetime code so he doesn't get caught. Shameless is also a television show that premier on SHOWTIME. The series follows the dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher, a single father of six children. While he spends his days drunk, his kids learn to take care of themselves. Dad's a drunk, Mom split long ago, eldest

Furthermore, when psychoanalyzing the personality of Dexter Morgan, one can find reasonable evidence to come to the conclusion that he is a sociopath. Researchers believe that it is either genetics or early childhood trauma, like abuse or, possibly in Dexter’s case, watching his mother being murdered, that can cause a person to become a sociopath (SFDiplomat 3). We can see that genetics could be a feasible cause as the main antagonist of the first season ended up being his brother. There are a number of signs that lead to Dexter being classified as a sociopath. When Dexter kills his victims, he feels no remorse or guilt of his action; also, he lies and breaks the law constantly. While most sociopaths appear to be angry all the time, some come…

Referring to Erikson's Psychosocial Stages of Development, Dexter fits best into the first and second stages which are trust vs. mistrust. Dexter was found by Harry, his adoptive father who was a policeman, trapped in a storage container, covered in his mother’s blood after he watched her be brutally murdered in front of him. As Dexter got older, he was never able to let go of his sense of insecurity and never trusted anyone other than Harry. This occurrence is one of the largest reasons that caused him to become a serial killer and created the sociopathic behavior in him. Dexter says multiple times that he feels powerless and anxious when he is not able to kill someone. A few times in the series he has to lie low and cannot perform his killing…

Over the years, many people have been diagnosed with psychological disorders, whether they were right or wrong. But, besides movies and television shows, there have also been footage of real life people today with these disorders. One fictional character has played a part of not one, but many disorders. This fictional character is Dexter Morgan; He is the main character of the series Dexter that lasted 8 seasons long. Robert William Pickton was a pig farmer and serial killer who targeted prostitutes and murdered them on his farm. We viewed the documentary about him, as well as the Criminal Minds episode to compare how real life crimes are shown in the media. They both had very different ways of portraying the case. The documentary had real facts, interviews, and voice recordings of Pickton. The Criminal Minds episode followed a similar storyline, but altered some of the facts to make it a more interesting and intense show that their audience would enjoy. Some of the differences were the length of time it took to catch Pickton, the isolation of the farm, and the gender of the victims.…

This television show, written by James Manos Jr., is a very bloody and exciting series. In season four Dexter discovers another serial killer, Arthur Mitchell. James’s purpose of creating this show is to represent how the serial killer Dexter is not a monster. He emphasis how others are real monsters when they murder innocent people. Arthur was the writer’s main argument to express that Dexter, in comparison to other serial killers, is not a bad person. Manos is trying to appeal to an older audience. He wants the viewers to gain a relationship with Dexter, and understand why he kills. This source paves the path for this argumentative research paper by giving good examples of actual monsters in comparison to Dexter.…

Both works also touch upon the issue of media violence, but I feel as if Dexter really challenges what we as a viewing public think we know about media violence. Although there is reoccurring theme of brutality to the Dexter series, the producers have shown us that the people who enjoy and create this type of on-screen brutality can be smart and creative and not just vulgar and graphic. Dexter’s sincerity and likeability sets him apart from the other on screen “slasher” types. Another defining feature about Dexter is the fact that Dexter’s world is a democratic world. Young or old, black, white, Asian or Hispanic, wealthy or not, his violence touches anyone who is a bad person or commits heinous crimes against others. In fact, I think the violence contained in the series is the least interesting aspect of the show. The villains who end up on Dexter’s infamous table all die in the same way and the mechanics of the act aren’t important. I think what is interesting is the fact that each of the killings add complexity to Dexter the character and the narrative. In fact, most viewers are left feeling as if Dexter is a…

Serial killers have always been overdramatized in movies, TV shows, and on the news, but no one truly understand them or their disorder. Dexter is a show that truly brought this mental illness to life, and understanding it is a job in itself. Dexter is a television show with a young man who is a serial killer that kills killers. While this is an extraordinary idea, the idea can still be examined and his characteristics are plausible. Being able to understand the characteristics of an antisocial personality disorder patient, what causes the disease, and what the outcome of treatment versus no treatment are is important when evaluating a patient, and eventually trying to fully solve the problem.…

They had been sitting in her splattered blood for days when he found them. Harry was a police and had a family of his own. He took Dexter and left his brother. Dexter never knew of this brother until eventually he came into contact with him in later episodes, and found out he was a murderer. Dexter’s traumatic past led to a sensation to kill. Like Hans Eysenck studied, Dexter was an introvert as a teenager, very quiet and to him self. He was also found to be much of a psychotic. Harry found him killing animals for no reason. He knew that he had an urge to kill because of what he witnessed in his past. Eysenck said that psychopaths were insensitive to others, hostile, cruel, and inhumane, which Dexter showed by harming animals who had no control over their selves. When Harry saw this he began mentoring Dexter into channeling his aggression the right way. Harry gave Dexter a code to follow, which explained that you could only murder someone who absolutely without a doubt deserved it and was harming others. He also told him to disguise the real him and pretend to be a friendly sociable guy to the plain eyes view. Dexter soon began killing people who he felt were a threat to…

For this journal entry I chose to review the television show Criminal Minds, viewed on September 21, 2016. I picked season one episode fifteen “Unfinished Business” for this journal because it goes over profiling a serial killer. Max Ryan retires from the BAU and moves down to Philadelphia in order to continue to unofficially work on a case he’s been doing for eighteen years. He’s been trying to catch the Keystone Killer, which started back up when Ryan had a book opening. Ryan received a word search which was the killer’s way of giving a clue to who he was or his victim.…
