Essay 4: A closer examination of Winn’s “TV Addition”

Zoing! As my nephew, Matt (5 years of age) rein acted his favorite Pokémon character Jigglypuff. Drooling like a crazed zombie as he pierced the screen of our 60’ inch Samsung TV 2 feet away. His mind was warped and all signs of life had been sucked dry due to his unquenchable loyalty to the Pokémon series. He was later cured of his addition when he learned the so-called Pokémon he loved dearly was a series inspired by someone’s imagination and NOT real.   In more ways than one, TV affects everyone whether it is positive or negative. Giving a sense of time illusion, allows an individual to escape into fantasy, and deters the ability to communicate. Television has evolved its viewers to become more visual and learn items of interest through seeing and hearing, almost like a form of home institution instead of the traditional institutions we know much about.
TV distorts time because of its endless series of shows that are airing. If one would take the time to actually view TV show, it would be quite obvious that they are not real but much distorted. A prime example of a show that distorts time would be the TV series 24 in which all the series is within 24 hours, and within this time many incidents happen that would not make sense and happen all within 24 hours of a day. TV not only distorts time but also makes time seem shorter in many ways that one can comprehend. In many cases, TV distorts time by making it seem longer or shorter than it really is, think about it, when one is watching a really good movie, it seems as though time has slowed down because one is literally consumed into the plot, whereas if one views something very uninteresting, time seems to be stopped in a never ending phase of boredom.
