Tupac Bibliography

Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in Bronx, New York. His mother Alice Faye

Williams called herself Afeni Shakur. She was a Black Panther Activist and became

political. While married she had an affair with one of Malcolm X’s bodyguard,

also carried on with Legs (a small Harlem drug baron) and Billy, a member of the Black

Panthers. As a young boy Tupac moved around a lot and had no real friends. Growing up

it bothered Tupac that he never knew who his father was. As he grew older it tormented

him that his mother would tell him that she did not know who his father was. From his

childhood everyone called him the “Black Prince.” Moving from city to city made him

very lonely He retreated into writing love songs and poetry. He became interested in

acting; it was his way of escaping his life. He was good at acting which made him eager

to leave his family behind. At the age of twelve he landed his first role with a theater

group in the impoverished Harlem section of Manhattan. The character he played was

Travis in “A Rasin in the Sun.” Later at the age of fifteen, living in Baltimore, he fell into

rap and started writing lyrics. He began to start changing his attitude; he called himself

MC New York and made people think he was a tough guy. Tupac enrolled in the

Baltimore school for the Arts, where he studied acting and ballet with white kids where

he finally felt in touch with himself. He loved going to school, it taught him a lot and he

started to feel like he really wanted to be an artist. By the time he was twenty Tupac had

been arrested eight times. Marion Knight had paid one million dollars for Tupac’s bail.

After being convicted of sexual abuse he had to served four and a half years in prison.

In addition he was the subject of two wrongful death law suits, one involving a six year

old boy, who was killed between Tupac’s gang and a rival gang from the cross fire. In the

eighties he teamed up with Humpty-Hump and other Oakland rappers and created Digital

Underground. In 1990 the group released its first and best album Sex Packets, which

featured two classic tracks “Humpty Dance” and “Doowutchyalike.” In 1992 Tupac

entered a successful five year period when he broke free from D.U. and went solo, and

became known as 2pac and Makaveli. “2Pacolypse Now” a gangsta rap document that

put him in the notorious, high speed lane to stardom. Tupac sold over 75 million

worldwide records, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. He also

stared in a low budget film about gangs called “Juice.” In 1993 he released strictly for my

N.I.G.G.A.Z., an album that crossed Tupac over to the pop charts. Unfortunately, there

were allegations of a violent attack on an off duty police officer. Those charges were

dropped due to insufficient evidence. Tupac was also charged with rape, a crime he did

not commit but was still convicted of sodomy. The same year Tupac played a single

father and love interest to Janet Jackson’s character in the film “Poetic Justice.” In

November of 1994, Tupac was shot five times after being robbed of forty thousand

dollars worth of jewelry. He surprisingly recovered from his injuries and produced his

most impressive artistic accomplishment “Me Against the World,” which sold two

million copies and the double CD “All Eyez on Me” sold three million. As his career

rose through fame and fortune, Tupac was killed (most people say very suspiciously) on

September 13, 1996, after watching a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, with the president

of Death Row records Marion Knight.

Tupac himself often said “that he expected he’d die by the sword before he reached

thirty.” After his death, his label released an album, “The Don Killuminati,” were the
