Trust and Interpersonal Relationships
Teamwork is almost essential in organizations and in college. Trust is a key factor in working with team members and establishing the interpersonal relationships in teams to enhance performance toward the common goal. Keeping trust between all team members can be a large initiative, and this document will detail what is needed to instill trust and what happens when it is lost, and how to achieve the way back to a cohesive team.
First off, let’s discuss what makes a great team. The members need to understand and agree on the mission; will need to know what they are going to do, and how they will do it. Good preparation saves time, and it is easier to set some ground rules in the beginning than to deal with an issue after a problem develops. A good team needs members with different ideas, opinion and work styles. Ideally, teams need intuitive, logical and positive thinkers with enough self confidence to respect each other (Anonymous, 2008, p. 6).
It is my opinion that trust is assumed in teams until there is reason that trust needs to be earned. When participating in a group or team, shared values and the desire for good performance establishes a bond between team members so trust can take place. Collaboration and expressing your opinion, having shared values and trust keeps the team working to a common goal. There needs to be participation for the end state of good performance to take place. I relate earned trust to be the same as conditional trust. The key to trust in teams is unconditional. When a member starts in a team, they collaborate based on formed values and effectively work toward the end goal of achievement and performance.
In a team, when the following result, trust is lost and needs to be resolved before the trustful cohesive team can emerge again.
1. Lack of cohesiveness when discussions divide members
2. Members complain and find fault
3. Combative behavior is displayed
