Political Science 101
Truman Show Ideological power is the third face of power and its the power that works behind the scenes. Its when someone has the ability to create desires and wants in someone that would benefit the person with power. This is done indirectly, and is usually done without the person affected even knowing about it, its an invisible power. In both Brave New World and the
Truman Show we can see ideological power controlling people and creating false realities for society. In the Truman Show Christoph controls every part of Truman's life and the environment around him. He makes him fear water and attempts to shy him away from exploration, discovery, and ultimately truth. Compared to Brave New World this is more of a direct control through actors and the environment in which Truman is in. In Brave New World its much like the Truman show where the elite ruling class are the directors and the workers for the tv show. I can also make a comparison the the clueless people of the world state and to all of the people watching the Truman show. The viewers nevered cared about Truman as a human and whether he died or not, all they cared about was the amusement to themselves. They didn’t think about what it would be like to be in his shoes. An example could be the two security guards at the end of the movie, “Okay, lets see what else is on”. This is like the people in the world state and their need for entertainment when they were asking John to whip himself. There are lots of similarities of ideological power in both Brave New World and the Truman Show. Both Christoph and the ruling class have strict control over their societies.
They control the environment and what goes on and where. Both have controlled people from their births with ideological power whether it was through physical manipulation or through other people. Christoph is basically leading Truman's life for him without him having a say in it. This can be compared to Thomas and his leadership and direction over his entire society.

In the Truman Show, the main character, Truman, is adopted at birth by a company that wants to make a documentary of his entire life. Everything that happens to Truman is a result of decisions made by those in the company, especially the main person in charge, Christof. This may have been partially from their curiosity. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag recognized a flaw by realizing that no one had emotion. He realized that they didn’t have emotion. This relates to him being curious because after that he thought the answers were in the books, which made him steal them. This made him see that his wife did not love him. Also, he was shown, while talking to Mildred’s friends, that they could careless about their children. Truman, in The Truman Show, also became aware that there was a defect. Truman became aware that everyday it was the same; he saw repetition. He saw that everything revolved around him and when he tried to leave the workers would make him stop and turn around. Truman found this suspicious and his suspicions lead to him finding out more about his society. This similar characteristic made Truman and Montag act recklessly. The way in which we view an object, situation or concept, greatly affects how we interpret its reality. This concept is explored by using Point of view to change the viewer’s ideas about the True reality of within the Truman show. The whole idea and notion of our reality is based upon what we see, what we grow up with. We learn from a young age what we see isn’t always the truth, and therefore we adapt our reality to what we already know. This is the same for Truman Burbank, a 33 year old average man. He is the unknowingly star of a television show all of his life. Everything he does and says is recorded and televised uninterrupted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Like us Truman has never questioned his life as his point of view has never been given the opportunity to change. That was until a series of incidents occurred that changed his Point of view. A key change in Truman’s point of view is when a series of onset glitches lead him to see a different reality that clashes with what he knows. These events lead him to become erratic and quite demented (Evident by the erratic car trip with Meryl), eventually leading to a point where Truman has Meryl by the throat with a set of dicers and Meryl screams’’ Somebody do something’’.
