Truancy in Ipg
TRUANCY
Truancy or absenteeism is unapproved absence from class or any program. Nowadays, playing truant is a common and growing problem among the students and others who work in the educational field. For me, it should not be a common practice because truancy will negatively affect education. In Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Kota Bharu (IPGKKB), there are three main factors that make truancy a serious problem; lack of interest in study, personal matters and stress issues.
First of all, most students who like to play truant is because they have no interest in their education. Usually, it occurs because students are falling far behind in their academically, so they think there is no point for them to study or in other words, they simply give up. Besides, students feel like they do not appropriate to their course when they always get low marks in a quiz or in examinations. Some students was forced by their family to further their study in this institute or they just get in only to get the allowance and instead of studying hard, they just aim to pass the exam.
Secondly, students that have personal matters might lead them to play truant. For example, a student may face a financial problem. At the same time, a club organizes a programme which the student must take part because the student is a top council member. So, the student will not be able to join that programme because of personal problem due to lack of money. Furthermore, students may also face family problem. According to a warden in IPGKKB, the most prominent problem faced by the students is a family problem. The students do not have a good relationship with their family because of any factor like difference in opinion about something that can cause small fights between them. Even though it is only a small fight, the effect will lead them to play truant to show their dissatisfaction. Usually, some students that are in this situation, just need attention to share their problems.
Last but not least, the

After the research, truancy offenders in the end had more incarcerations and more probations than other offenders. By understanding the severe consequences of truancy offenses, solid intervention programs to avoid or decrease truancy cases are critically needed. Not by surprise, another finding was that youth with disabilities were more probable to be referred for truancy. One of the main reasons for truancy is the hard time with school, especially poor performance, and the current results sustain the view that children may use truancy to separate themselves from what they see as an intimidating environment (Zhang, Wilson, Katsiyannis, Barrett, Ju, and Wu, 2010, p.…

There are many strengths and limitations for using participant observation to study truancy. Truancy is defined as an unauthorised absence from school. In contrast, there are days when nothing is going right or there are obstacles that are keeping students from paying attention in class. School Refusal

Most people can recall the scene in the movie “Farris Bueller’s Day Off” where he concocts and entire story and set up just so that he can stay home from school that day. His mother buys the fake fever induced by a hot blow dryer and the automated puking sounds coming from the bathroom, however there are parents who deal with these hysterics almost everyday. A case study that I found in an article by Nicole Setzer, Ph.d., and Amanda Salzhauer, MSW at the University of Child Study Center summarizes a young girl named Rebecca’s school refusal case. Rebecca is eight years old and has always had some issues about going to school. She is now in third grade and after only two months of school so far this year her problems have significantly worsened. Almost everyday she will try some sort of tactic to stay home from school whether it be throwing a fit so that she is late for the bus, or after arriving at school constantly complaining about a stomach ache or a head ache. The study goes on to say that her mother picks her up from school about twice a week, Rebecca is taken home where she usually spends the rest of the day watching TV or playing with her toys. (Kearney and Silverman 1993) This is not considered truancy from school but however the growing trend of developing school refusal behavior.…

Most students have the experience of skipping class due to various kinds of excuses. No matter what the excuse is, almost everyone agree that skipping class is not a proper behavior for the college students, so that it will lead to some serious consequences. In my view, every coin has two sides, and we shall not just focus on one side. Speaking to the behavior of skipping class, objectively, there are two kinds of consequences of it.…

    TRUANT CASES

Truant cases has been for many years but recently it has become more serious as the number of cases rises sharply either those who truant alternately or continuously. Class teachers play a very important role in this case. They take attendance of pupils every day in and out of the school ‘without fail’. The problem is, they fail to take attendance every day. The reasons are, teachers go out for courses and nobody to take over the class attendance. Secondly, there are a few teachers who take pupils attendance lightly, which means the attendances are not taken every day. Thirdly, teachers who take attendance every day but do not bother about pupils who are absent, whilst no follow-up with their parents or care-taker on informing them about their children’s absents. When the class teacher fail to take actions, I as a discipline master in this school could not perform my duty perfectly in the school. Reminders have been given every now and then but it has fallen on deaf ears.…

Student’s absenteeism has different effects. According to Conie A. Menia (2014), it is an alarming problem for administrators, teachers, parents, and the society, in general, as well as for the students, in particular. Clores (2009) stated that truancy may indicate low performance of teachers, students’ dissatisfaction of the school service, or lack of or poor academic and non- academic structures or policies that address the problems or factors influencing or reinforcing this behavior. Another study ( Savers, D. et al, 2005) says that when a student misses a day of school he/she must have lost the chance to hear others, interpret and analyzing the lessons or joins the interaction within the class. Parents are financially burdened for having their children to stay longer in the school,…

    Adolescent Truancy

Based on the research from the article on adolescent truancy I learned that truancy has become an ever growing problem and is caused from several different factors. Adolescent truancy is caused by multiple out-of-school and in-school factors. The majority of abscises are driven from outside factors, such as family problems, living conditions, substance use, and community involvement, and school factors, like bullying or hazing. Looking at the research by Dube and Orpinas(2009) it breaks it down into three main behavioral profile groups based on reinforcement be it negative and positive reinforcement, also no reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is things like skipping school to go to the mall or skate park things of that nature. Negative reinforcement is family conflict, living conditions, and substance problems. With substance abuse problems leads to more skipping school, and with skipping school leads to more substance abuse problems, so they both feed of each other. The research is supported by the data that was collected from a study that was done with 20 kids, ages 8-16 and grades 5th to 11th.…

As per the Legislatives Analysts Office, once a student is designated a truant, state law requires schools, districts, counties, and courts to intervene to ensure that parents and pupils receive certain services to assist them in complying with attendance laws. When these various interventions fail meaning parents or guardians still do not send a child to school or a student misses an unlawful amount of school, the matter is referred to the courts. Courts can then use penalties or other measures to seek compliance.…
