Trends and Patterns on the Internet and the World Wide Web

Before I could answer this question, I think I should first define the term “trends and patters on the internet in this and world wide web.” For me, this phrase is referring to the various developments and features of the internet and the world wide web which netizens (referring to the “citizens of the internet”) see or use. The term may also refer to the usage of the internet or the world wide web. As I have tried to search through Google to what this term may actually mean, a number of results showed studies about web browsing patterns of Internet users, websites’ usage of enhanced features of the internet/world wide web, interaction and socialization of netizens throughout the web, world usage patterns & demographics, etc. Meaning the answer to the question is really extensive but I did a list of my own before searching. Of course, topping my list is the trend of using social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. These are just the among the various social networking sites frequently being used on the world wide web nowadays. According to a prediction by EMarketer (, there will be 1.43 billion social network users this year which is a 19.2 percent increase from 2011. They also said that the 63.2 percent of internet users who will visit a social network at least once a month will rise to 67.6 percent next year and 70.7 percent in 2014. This year, one out of five people in the world will use a social networking site and one in every four in 2014 said EMarketer. Under the usage of social media websites is the trend of creating, using and spreading memes. Before further discussion, a meme, according to my Journalism 196 class, is a virally-transmitted cultural symbol or idea. As for this particular answer, we’ll be talking about internet memes which are memes that circulate over the internet.
