Treatments for ADHD in Children
5.3 million Children from 3-17 years of age have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), (Adams, et al, 2009, p. 248). In today’s growing pharmaceutical market, it is critical to stop and realize the side effects of these medications prescribed for ADHD and recognize some of the vulnerable populations taking these prescribed medications.   My aim is to weigh out the risks and the benefits of children taking pharmaceuticals in comparison to psychosocial treatment and to evaluate the long and short-term risks on their development as well as other options that do not involve medication that have been proven to work. I will look further into parenting beliefs and behavior as mediating variables that predict the outcome of the child’s treatment, as well as inspecting the health care services and the communities, which these children are involved.   Until conducting this research, I was unaware of the cost benefit and time benefit to pharmaceuticals in comparison to psychosocial treatment as well as the growth developmental risks in children taking these medications, which I will further explore and discuss in this paper.   My research will evaluate some of the past research regarding children diagnosed and treated for ADHD to understand the best treatment to provide, have it be pharmaceuticals, psychosocial or both.
I will first define ADHD as listed in the National Institutes of Health (2008) as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity as the key behaviors; some of these behaviors are more severe and occurs more often in some children.   To be diagnosed with this disorder a child must have symptoms for six or more months and to a degree greater than other children of the same age.   The exact cause of ADHD remains unknown, but some theories and studies seem to suggest both genetic and environmental factors play a big role (Wermter, A., Laucht,...
