Complexity science
Complexity science or quantum science looks at change, how it works, what it means, where it moves and where it is going. It is a group of theoretical constructs that look at a universe and its elements as complex adaptive systems. It seeks relationships between and among all things and attempts to define the nature of those relationships.

In the current work environment, it is feasible as it recognizes that individuals are important but more important is the relationship between individuals and their relationship in a system. Complexity science encourages groups to function in an interdependent environment and be cognizant of how each decision affects other departments. It requires managers to possess skills to integrate group activities, to cross group boundaries and to see all systems as a fundamental set of relationships. My current work environment is the Operating Room which requires many of the skills listed. The Operating room’s function is very interdependent with other departments and requires good working relationships between these departments. Newtonian age versus quantum age characteristics

Newtonian age characteristics of leadership are based on a vertical approach to leadership; it is hierarchical. It has boundaries and well defined structure whereas quantum leadership is chaotic and has open borders. Quantum age leadership is multilateral multidirectional, interactive and intersecting. Quantum leadership is based on relationships; power is created by relationships. The vision and culture of an organization becomes very important in quantum leadership as it is about creating the environment. Planning, predicting and analyzing are important activities of a Newtonian organization as is looking at the numbers for economic health, productivity and physical well being. A Newtonian leadership limit’s the control and information through the hierarchy unlike Quantum leadership which allows for free flowing information. A Newtonian organization has a structured organizational chart with very specific lines of authority and limits to responsibilities.

Quantum characteristics are evident in our work place by the policies and encouragement to staff to support a just culture, culture of learning and culture of safety. The Leadership Council encourages staff to report near misses, adverse events and Occupational Health and Safety concerns. Encouraging reporting by the staff contributes to a learning environment and culture. Transformational, quantum and new age leadership

Transformational leadership encourages employees to engage in their workplace. Employees must be given clear guidance to generate awareness and acceptance of a group’s purpose. When they have this awareness they can see beyond their own needs and self interest. A leader in this workplace must be able to encourage employees to accomplish more than they intended by motivation, challenge and intellectual stimulation.
