Intro:
According to Trajectories of Family Management Practices and Early Adolescent Behavioral Outcomes by John B. Willet research shows that adolescents experience developmental changes in their relationships with their parents and in behavioral outcomes during early adolescents. Stage-environment fit theory was used to examine the relationship between family management practices and early adolescent problem behavior during middle school years. This theory provides a comprehensive theoretic framework for considering the joint influence of puberty, school systems, and parent-child relationships on problem adolescent development. Adolescents is a developmental period marked by numerous changes for the individual including biological changes, the pursuit of autonomy and independence.   The term family management practices refer to a set of family practices that are comprehensive in scope and specifically address key topics, such as parent-child involvement. During these years teens evaluate their relationship with their parents. The way in which both, parents and adolescents, handle theses changes has an impact on the adolescents’ behavioral development.

Method:
The sample comprised of about 1,000 adolescents between the ages of 11 and 15 years old. The study followed participating adolescents from the sixth to eighth grade from eight middle schools in the Pacific Northeast. Of all the adolescents surveyed in the first wave, only 91% completed all 2 waves. Approximately 76% of participating adolescents were European, 5% were Asian or Pacific Islander, 4% were Hispanic, 3% were American Indian, 1% were African American, 11% were others. Approximately 54% of the adolescents were female, and 27% were from single-parent families.
