Superstore Management With an HRM Edge
I. Introduction
This report is submitted on December 31, 2002 to Ms. Mahjabeen Ahmad, Associate Professor, IBA, University of Dhaka. This report was orally assigned on October 20, 2002 as part of the Human Resource Management course requirement.
The primary objective of this report is to fulfill the partial requirement of the course. The secondary objective is to study the role of Human Resource Management in the success of a pioneering retail superstore in Bangladesh.
The report aims to highlight the contribution of excellent Human Resource Management in giving Agora an edge over its competitors. The report’s focus is on the training and development at Agora and how it has created a work force with the right skills, attitude and motivation, resulting in highly satisfied customers.
The concept of a superstore is to provide all the daily necessities under one roof. Even though this concept is prevalent in the West, it is relatively new for Bangladesh. The idea is not just to be a mere buyer and seller of goods - it is the service differentiation that makes this idea unique. It is the customer service and the people who provide it that give one superstore a competitive edge over the others.
While preparing this report, some constraints were faced. The HR effort at Agora is relatively new and many of the practices are still in the developing stage. In addition, companies are usually reluctant to furnish detailed information about their internal policies and practices. Also, the HR executives were usually very busy and could only manage limited time for interviews. Moreover, since HR management at Agora has many dimensions, all aspects of it cannot be incorporated in a report of this length. Hence we have concentrated on certain salient features and given an overview of the others.
