Introduction
T

ourism is world's largest legitimate service industry. Any angle we look at tourism industry- be generate faster and deeper human employment or to educate our generations or simply to collect memorable experiences in life, there is no parallel to tourism. A pointer to the importance and impact of tourism worldwide, tourism accounts for more than ten percent of the global gross national product (Refer to World Bank data on tourism).In the era of all pervading globalization, competition, core competence and outsourcing, for' many developing countries, tourism experience products may be the only wares left to sell to the outside world. Even such developed nations as France, USA and Australia co tourism revenue in a big way and make conscious efforts to market their tourism attractions. Tourism has been considered as a great phenomenon involving movement of millions of people all over the world. The number of international tourists and their expenditure has grown strongly. The contribution of this sector to GDP of Bangladesh is insignificant. Bangladesh is enriching with enormous tourist assets, spots and tourists facilities which have not yet been explored. Chittagong is called the commercial capital in Bangladesh. It has vast potentiality in tourism due to its vast tourist spots which is full of natural beauty. As such this study has been designed to measure the attitude and satisfaction of tourists about various facilities available and to suggest strategic and innovative measures to overcome the problems and to develop these sectors. On the basis of the study, some measures such as adequate operational freedom to BPC, involvement of private sector attracting foreign direct investment and forming joint venture, re-structuring of information transmission system, creation of resource zone new tourist spot and proper maintenance of existing destinations, allocation of sufficient fund by the Govt. improvement of law and order situation etc. have been recommended to overcome these problems and to design strategic policy for development of tourism sector in Chittagong. 1.1 Definition of tourism

Tourism is the act of traveling or sightseeing, particularly away from one's home collectively, the tourists visiting a place or landmark. In 1976, Tourism Society of England defined it as;
“Tourism is the temporary, short term movement of people to destination outside the places where they normally live and work and their activities during the stay at each destination.”

The definition of tourism which one was endorsed by the WTO in 1992 and adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 1993 is as: “Tourism comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year of leisure, business and other purpose.” The World Tourism Organization (WTO) defines;

“Tourists as people who travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of and activity remunerated from within the place visited.” Again the World Tourism Organization (WTO) defined the term tourism and classified the various types of visitors as follows: i. Tourism - The activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. ii. Tourist (overnight visitor)’- Visitor staying at least one night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited. iii. Same Day Visitor (excursionist)’- Visitor who does not spend the night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited. iv. Visitor - Any person traveling to a place other than that of his/ her usual environment for less than 12 consecutive months and whose main purpose of travel is not to work for pay in the place visited. v....
