Touching Spirit Bear
2. What does Cole do and why does he do it?

What Cole does is he finds the gas in the supplies they left Cole, and puts it all over the cabin or shelter. Then Cole looks for matches and lights the cabin on fire. The reason why Cole does this is because he doesn’t want to play anymore games.

3. What point does Garvey make with the cake?

Garvey tells Cole to try the ingredients for making a cake alone. So of course Cole tries it to prove he’s strong and brave. Then Garvey makes Cole try the cake, so he does. Cole liked the cake but didn’t like the ingredients separate. Garvey was trying to say that being alone isn’t always the answer it’s talking to people and being with people that will get you to the right answer.

5. What does he see and how does he react?

The thing Cole sees is a white bear or maybe a spirit bear like Edwin said. Cole saw the bear across the bay just standing there. Cole started yelling at the bear I’m going to kill you!!! Cole through a rock at the bear but it just stared at him. He turned to get the knife from the ashes of the cabin. When Cole turned back around the bear was gone.

I think the Japanese proverb, “Fall seven times, stand up eight” explains that no matter how many times you fall, you will get up. In Touching Spirit Bear, the main character, Cole, struggles with how to live his life. He believes no one loves him, or appreciates him. Especially his parents, who could care less whether Cole was alive or dead. So, given the circumstances, Cole is a bad kid. He is 15, and has been in trouble with the law half his life. So, the proverb is saying, no matter how many tough times, relating to Cole, are in your life, push through, and stand up. Everyone gets to have a happy ending, you just have to know how to rise up to the challenge.…

In the beginning, the fire represents survival for them to get rescued. William Golding states, ¨...But you can even build huts-then you go off hunting and let out the fire-...¨ (Golding 71). They all set up a plan to have a signal fire and to keep it going at all times just in case a ship comes by so they could see the signal fire and get rescued but when it came time for the hunters to watch the fire they could care less of the fire and let it go out while they went hunting but came back with their first kill and was so excited that didn't really care that they let the fire out. Furthermore, Piggy goes quiet then expresses: ¨You didn't ought to have let that fire out. You said you'd keep the smoke going-¨ (Golding 71). One more time, the…

After snatching Piggy's glasses, the boys created a fire using the wood and leaves that they collected in a pile. At first, the fire was meant to create smoke so that the boys could signal a ship for help. Then it started to become a wildfire once the boys could not control the fire and were excited "at the power set free below them." (44) At first, the fire was meant for a good purpose but grew into something the boys did not plan for in the beginning. Destruction. I say beginning because when near the end of the book, Jack and his hunters decide to use the fire as a way of getting Ralph out of the forest so that they could basically kill him. "The fire was a big one and the drum-roll that he thought was left so far behind was nearer." (197) Ralph thought the destruction that the fire would cause would be over, but it ended up making a reappearance near the end of the…

The last straw that got him to that island was Cole beating up one of his fellow classmates, Peter Driscal, to the point of brain damage. Cole’s past of an abusive and alcoholic father show why he acts the way he does. Instead of facing long years in prison, Cole is given the opportunity by Garvey, his parole officer, to join Circle Justice. While he is at the island where the program is located, Cole tries to escape but ends up almost being killed by Spirit bear, a bear that is said to be a spiritual being. Cole does not seem to have any control of the unforgettable emotions. “Edwin told me once that anger was a memory never forgotten. He’s right” (Page 130). The main cause of his anger is his own angry and alcoholic father and shy hopeless mother. Cole is beaten up by his angry father without any mercy, and his shy mother only watches him getting beaten. She does not even attempt to stop her husband from beating her own son. These irresponsible actions by Cole’s parents, made him feel that he was worthless and lived his life for no reason. “You don’t get it do you? My parents are divorced and don’t give a rat if I live or die. All they care about is themselves. Nobody cares about me. All my life I’ve been dumped on” (Page 27). As a result, the anger that was building inside of him eventually got out of control. This anger causes Cole to commit crimes. Cole robbed and trashed a hardware store. Peter, a boy at Cole’s school, found out that Cole did this act of violence. So, Peter told on Cole. Cole found out, in which he got very angry and mad. Instead of confronting Peter, Cole decided to smash Peter’s head against the sidewalk, very badly.Once Cole was sent to the island of Drake in Alaska, Cole felt depressed and angry at the same time. Cole eventually burnt down his cabin. Another example of his anger is dealing with the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear was calmly looking at Cole. Cole realized that this bear was not afraid of him. So, Cole let out his anger and tried to kill the bear. Instead of Cole hurting…

In the early stages of the novel, the conflict which sets the entire story in motion takes place as Cole’s mother has decided to sell the ranch now that his grandfather has died. Cole is distraught over this as the ranch is his desired lot in life. He attempts to talk to the family’s attorney after attempts at persuasion with his mother fail only to reach similar end. The reasoning the attorney postulates for his mother’s decision is a minute detail of the scene but brings about an interesting and potentially underlying idea throughout the story. His rationalizes her motives on the basis that, “she’s a young woman and my guess is that she’s like to have a little more social life than what she’s used to” (McCarthy 17). This determination does not come off as explicitly judgmental but simply a plausibly suggestion for her actions. Upon closer examination however, it proves to be more meaningful.…
