Too Much Socializing:
Being Vigilant and Moderating Facebook Use
The youth of today is really different and far from those who grew up from previous generations of say, the 80’s or even the 90’s. When we talk about how children and teenagers have fun and spend their time back in the days, what usually comes to mind is seeing them play and spend time outside with their friends and family or some indoor activity such as board games or playing make believe. Today, no longer do we see them outside but instead we commonly see the young generation today spending most of their time indoors, glued to their seats in front of the computer, preferring to play those video games and/or spending time on social networking websites.
Since the first social networking site went online and opened to the public, they have significantly developed and through the years a whole lot more of its kind appeared and went into service such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Features and functionalities of these websites improved and as their user bases grew with big numbers of people online, concerns about security and privacy on these social networking websites as well as the Internet in general these days are rising more than ever.
Social networking websites are really popular, especially among adolescents and the younger generation. These websites today are now one of the primary methods of communication and interaction among people. On one hand, the use of these websites can be beneficial when managed properly, responsibly, and moderately.
The downside to these online communities is that they can present threats to their users such as when used for exceedingly long periods of time. Consequences that may result vary, ranging from the physical effects on our bodies, such as eye sores and back pains, to psychological effects like depression and loneliness.
