There are several themes that seems to recur in Orwell’s works. One of Orwell’s favorite themes is totalitarianism. In the novel Animal Farm, Orwell described a society of animals under the total control of humans. The animals decide to do away with these humans after being told Old Major’s dreams of a succesful rebellion, where the animals will create there own utopia. After the humans are overthrown the pigs, because of their intelligence, step up as leaders. The pigs begin to manipulate the “utopia” in their favor. As all the animals start to open up to there leaders, the pigs begin to take over.Snowball,   one of the pigs, decides to make plans for a windmill to provide electricity. Napoleon, the wisest pig, doesn’t want it bulit, but he calls up a vote between the animals. Before they voted, Napoleon summons a pack of ferocious dogs, who chase Snowball off the farm forever. He then says there will be no more debates and he tells them the windmill will be built and that it was his own idea. Napoleons hunger for power begin to drive him into a point where he becomes a dictator, forcing confessions from innocent animals and havind viscious dogs kill them in front of the entire farm. He and the pigs move into the Jone’s house and sleep in the beds. They rationed out lower amounts of food to the other animals just so they can have more and when a rule on the farm was broken by them, they would change them so that they weren’t guilty. As time passed, Napoleon buys more land from other farms and life on the farm still remained harsh for the animals (except the pigs). [continues]
