Tony Fernandes and Airasia
Early years
Born in Kuala Lumpur to a Goan father and Malacca Portuguese mother, Dato' Sri Tony Fernandes is the son of the late Stephen Edward Fernandes, and Ena Dorothy Fernandez. When he was young, he used to follow his mother, a businesswoman, to Tupperware dealer parties and conventions.
He was educated at Epsom College 1977-83 and then graduated from the London School of Economics in 1987. He worked very briefly with Virgin Atlantic as an auditor, subsequently becoming the financial controller for Richard Branson's Virgin Records in London from 1987 to 1989.[1]
Tony was admitted as Associate Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 1991 and became Fellow Member in 1996.
Upon his return to Malaysia, he became the youngest-ever managing director of Warner Music (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Though an accountant, Fernandes is an amateur guitarist and also has achieved grade 8 piano which is where his musical inclination lies. He was responsible for revolutionising ethnic music, nasyid and dangdut, bringing them into the mainstream of contemporary Malaysian music.
He subsequently became the South East Asian regional vice-president for Warner Music Group from 1992-2001. When Time Warner Inc announced its merger with America Online Inc., Fernandes left to pursue his dream of starting a budget no-frills airline. However, his application for a license from the Malaysian government was rejected.
[edit] Launching AirAsia
It was through Datuk Pahamin A. Rejab, the former secretary-general of the Malaysian Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry that Fernandes got to meet up with the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in October 2001.
AirAsia, the heavily-indebted subsidiary of the Malaysian government-owned conglomerate, DRB-Hicom, was losing money speedily. Instead of starting from scratch, Mahathir advised Fernandes to buy an existing airline instead. Fernandes mortgaged his home and sank his savings to acquire the company,

Even if running his business, he is unafraid to take risks and be the first one to try new things. Venturing into the low-cost carrier industry was a risky move on his part. While low-cost carriers had been pretty much established in North America, Ireland and U.K, as well as most Europe, many of the airlines in Asia were still affluent, well-established and often, state-owned airlines. This risk, it would seem, paid off in the end as evident in the fact that nearly a fifth of the Asia's airline seats are now supplied by low-cost carriers. [6] He is also one of the first CEOs to harness the power of social media networks to sell tickets and market his airline. Air Asia is considered the first airline in Southeast Asia to introduce e-ticketing system, bypassing traditional travel agents. This saved the airline USD 8 per ticket for issuing physical ticket.…

Henri Mintzberg’s theory about manager plays 10 roles in discharging managerial duties and responsibilities are separated into four functions, planning, organising, leading and controlling. All four of this function is what makes managers so important in an organisation. Besides having to follow the four management function, a manager also performs these few important managerial roles. The roles are interpersonal, informational and decisional. Under interpersonal role, it is divided into three sections which are being a figurehead, leader and liaison. Tan Sri Anthony Francis Fernandes or better known as Tony Fernandes is a Malaysian entrepreneur and he is presently without a doubt one of the most admired executive-turned-entrepreneurs in the Malaysia corporate and working world. He is a 'big believer on big dreams' which he is a good example of a figurehead, whenever there is an important event that involves his company, he will be there to represent his company and because of this whenever you think about Tony Fernandes, you will think about Air Asia. As a manager, you have social ceremonial and legal responsibilities. You're expected to be a source of inspiration. People look up to you as a person with authority and as a figurehead. Tony Fernandes possessed good leadership because he is able to react to challenges and does not give up easily. From the material I got in the internet, it was a big challenge for him to start up because situation at that time was terrible and was widely assumed that the low-cost model will fail. However, Tony Fernandes predicted that Asia would face economy downturn and he could take this opportunity. The biggest challenge in his pathway to succeed in turning Air Asia from a fledging government-link commercial airline to a highly successful public-listed international company is the proposing of the idea of open skies agreements with Thailand, Indonesia and…
