Together We Stand

To Whom It May Concern:

Many citizens of our new suburban community started to notice what appears to be an outbreak of extensive illnesses in our community. After conducting some research on the subject, I had realized that the symptoms of those who exhibit this illness is clearly not a case of pure genetics and is not a simple coincidence. These symptoms can best be explained by a leakage or some sort of release of poisonous gas from the gas company located on the outskirts of the community, an occurrence that would not be as unexpected as some would hope due to their loose safety practices. I had come to the conclusion that the symptoms exhibited by this unexplained illness developing in our community, such as respiratory system irritations, convulsions, eye pain, gastrointestinal disturbances, among others, can best be explained by the exposure to hydrogen sulfide, a chemical used at the plant located in our community. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website, hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with a strong odor like rotten eggs. The website also says that one should not rely strictly on their sense of smell to detect this gas as it is rapidly fatigued (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Residents of the community know many who work at this plant because it is so small and tight-knit, and I am no exception. After talking to several of my friends and neighbors who are employed by the gas company, it had become apparent through their expert testimony that the safety standards and policies of the company are very loose and in some cases do not even meet the required safety regulations and guidelines that demand the safe handling of harmful chemicals. This is an issue on itself as it not only jeopardizes the health and safety of the workers, our friends and neighbors, but also the health and safety of our children and the environment surrounding...
