Today’s Educational Experience or Lack of Experience

A classroom has one teacher, multiple long tables set up with 3 chairs at each, there is a projector hanging from the ceiling and a pull down white board but most importantly there are 26 individuals, most resembling mindless “containers”. Approximately two dozen objects just sitting as if lumps on chairs, as though paralyzed and inadequate just consuming oxygen and space; this is still the scene in many of today’s classrooms. Regrettably the scene has not changed since Freire. “In the banking concept of education, knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable, upon those whom they consider to know nothing.” (Freire 244) The teacher longs for interaction, if you bother to look you can see the panic spread across her face as she poses questions, begging for the slightest hint of comprehension in the faces that stare blankly in her direction, the only question on their faces is “are we done yet?”   She tries again, but this time she poses the question so it may responded to with less thought, a simple acknowledgement would suffice. Still there is no response, again.   Now she feels embarrassed and frustrated, she alters the question again, as though begging, for someone to speak; all she wants is to hear a voice other than her own. She finally gets what she so desperately wanted, someone speaks. The teacher is now pleased yet disappointed all at the same time, for the voice she hears is regrettably one of the few voices she always hears, one of the three students that are willing to engage her, to challenge her way of thinking, to debate her points of view; and the rest of class continues to sit and remain unreachable to her yet again.
That may seem a horrifying story about education but I regret to inform you that it is no fictional piece of work, I have sat in this class on more than one occasion, and it is terrifying. In today’s schools and even colleges the ” banking” concept of... [continues]
