In the renowned novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem and Scout Finch face many adversities from getting stuck on a fence or trying to be killed by a an enemy of the family. Atticus Finch, their father and lawyer, is gone at work most of the day. This allows the two children to roam the small town of Maycomb, Alabama with virtually no one to look out for them except the maid, Calpurnia. Jem and Scout’s childhood was very independent and simpler than my childhood ever was.

Freedom is still something I wish I had more of, whether if that is going to more places with my friends or just staying home by myself late at night. It is safe to say that Jem and Scout had much more freedom than I did during the time of day. When I was Jem’s age, my mom still looked over me like a hawk to make sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong. With Jem and Scout, they were basically allowed to roam every part of the town during the day when Atticus was not home. Now at night, when Atticus comes home, they are able to sneak out multiple times and allowed to wander off in the dark after the Halloween pageant.

Everyone has their different lifestyles, and Jem and Scout’s lifestyle was a simple yet entertaining life in the small, old town of Maycomb. “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town.” (Lee 5) This quote just about sums up the town of Maycomb. I was born on a big military base in Germany. My life was hectic as a young life could possibly be. After living in a small town for a couple of years, we moved back to the same place I had been born, with the base even larger, although we didn’t actually live on it. My childhood was very entertaining like Jem and Scout’s, but far from simple.

Jem and Scout Finch had many adventures during the time of the novel and their own childhood. My childhood had less freedom and was less simple than the free-running, simple life of Jem and Scout. Although both of our childhood’s were very entertaining, ours differed in many ways...
