The Fight for Our Rights
It is hard to imagine those thirty-five years ago, young women were not admitted into many colleges and universities.   Athletic scholarships were seldom rewarded to females and math and science were reserved for just males.   Well, because of Title IX, the education and athletics for women has changed. Although Title IX has not made female athletes completely equal to men, it has greatly helped them gain equality in the athletic field and also in the classroom.   Before Title IX, women had no place in the sports life and could only have behind-the-scenes jobs.   After, they were able to participate along with a variety of other things that they weren’t allowed to do before.
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was put into effect on June 23, 1972, and could possibly be one of the most important pieces of legislature passed in the twentieth century. Although it was originally passed an education amendment, it helped to outlaw sex discrimination in schools and has a most pronounced impact on athletics for females (U.S Department of Education 11).   No law has ever meant more to women in sport than Title IX.   Within the amendment there is a proportionality requirement.   Huffman reports that this requirement states that the school’s athletic gender breakdown must be equal to the breakdown of the general student body (366).   Title IX does not only affect athletics but also curricular subjects such as medicine, law and science, and also activities such as dance and drama. Although Title IX does not require equal members, it does mandate an equal opportunity to participate and receive the benefits of competitive athletes.   Leveling the playing field in collegiate educational opportunities for females has brought $372 million a year in college athletic scholarship funding and varsity sport opportunities for over 150,000 women nationwide compared to the 32,000 in...
