Through Deaf Eyes
While watching Through Deaf Eyes, there were a lot of things that I didn’t think about before. For example, when they started talking about how even in deaf schools, African Americans were segregated from the rest of the white people I was a little thrown off by this. When talking about this in history classes, I never thought about segregating people twice?! The deaf community was already misunderstood and had to have their own schools and now the black deaf community had to be pushed out even farther? This concept started a whole new world for me. In my life, I really have never been exposed to sign language before. I think I have only met one real deaf person and he was about three and had a cochlear implant. So, the deaf community has never popped into my mind when it came to things like this.
I think that another big part of the movie, for me, was when the students from Gallaudet University protested against their new president because she wasn’t deaf. Again, this is not something that I had never thought about before. It was big when Obama first became president that was a big turning point for America and also very moving. I know it was more important to the African American community because of their history and how crazy that was for them! Now, I know I can’t relate to the deaf community but I do understand that as an all-deaf university there should be an all-deaf staff, including the president. For those students to fight that hard and win just goes to show how dedicated they are in preserving their community and not afraid to fight for what they believe in and what is right. I really like how proud and powerful the deaf community is when it comes to standing up for themselves and others. The last thing that I really liked which was really the first thing, was the man in the very beginning of the film. I thought that it was a very powerful way to start. We often don’t think about what we say before we say it and a comment like, “Are you deaf?!”

The message that was being sent was good, but the movie itself didn’t approach the topics fully. For one thing, it was not portrayed at all that the way the “white” people thought and acted was incorrect; it appeared to attack all the other ethnicities instead. I had rented this film years ago primarily for all the “A” list actors that were on the billing and I think that’s where my dislike started. With this many of them in one film and it winning an Oscar for Best Picture, one would surely think it would have been a masterpiece. I think it would have been better if there was a more solid storyline to follow because the bits and pieces here and there made it difficult to stay focused. In the end, I did like it enough to not dread watching it a couple of times to ensure I didn’t miss anything.…

My favorite part of the movie so far has been the section where the women are picketing in front of the White House. I was very moving how they all decided to go in together through the rough time even when they were thrown into prison. I was especially moved during the movie to see the lengths these women would go to in order to get their right to vote as well as women all throughout the United States of America which included starving themselves to make a point.…

As I read Deaf Again by Mark Drolsbaugh I can relate to Mark because I’m taking American Sign Language. Mark was born into deaf culture because both of his parents are deaf, however he was associated him self around hearing people. He conformed to the hearing world. I find that very hard to especially having deaf parents. I found interesting that he wasn’t deaf his whole life up in till the first grade he found something to be out of place. When I first took this class I didn’t know what I was getting my self into, if I was going to enjoy it or not. I was like Mark didn’t know how I was going to feel learning sign language if I was going to be able to grasp it. I’m still having trouble with it but I eventually will get it as I practice more. Mark had more poor signing skills because his peers were hearing that he went to school with, as well as his aunts and uncles and grandparents. It must be hard growing up with deaf parents especially being able to hear. He learned to associate him self with deaf culture and hearing culture. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like growing up with deaf parents.…

Movies can often teach us important lessons. They can show us different perspectives of different people and situations. Often times, without knowing it, movies teach us things when we don’t think we are learning anything. The movie Freedom Writers has a powerful and emotional message. The message of this movie is that we are all the same under the surface, this is most relevant to gangs and gang violence.…

I had no idea, for example, that they were as limited as they are. This article has also brought me to introspect about how my own views of what it is to be deaf have changed since I have become more familiar with the community that surrounds it. I feel it is the default opinion, for a hearing person who is uneducated in deaf culture, to use the medical perspective. Previous to becoming acquainted with the culture I would have assumed that any deaf person would desire the ability to hear on any level available. It is clear that this is simply not the case, and for good reason. Just as I do not with to be deaf and be forced to give up major parts of my culture, primarily music, I would not expect the inverse of a member of the deaf community. I feel that this article does a good job of distinguishing the difference between a disability and a difference. Being outside of the mainstream does not make someone less capable or accomplished as a person. Primarily I feel that this article is important, however, for the understanding it brings by helping the reader to truly understand both sides of what a cochlear implant does and by underlining that in the respect of assimilation to the deaf community and the ability to communicate through sign these implants could be seen as…

Watching the video titled zoom focus confession BSL zone was an eye opener as I learn how scholarly people who made a great contribution in past history for example (Alexander Graham, Aristotle etc.) were against the creation of deaf language and culture. The following is a quote from the first half of the video from Alexander Graham, “It is to stop Deaf people mixing, socializing and marrying..”…

Now since there wasn’t much to that, I decided to go to another event. I went to a car wash that Harvest Bible Chapel was hosting. Now there were people who spoke as well as deaf people at this event, but it was great being able to come and see what all was going on. When a deaf person was trying to speak to someone who didn’t know sign language, they used creative ways to talk to them such as acting it out or spelling it on their hand. I thought this was really cool and that you don’t necessary have to know sign language to communicate with someone who is deaf.…

The conference that I attended was “Audism and Inclusion: Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community”. The seminar was presented by Dr. David M. Feldman and Ms. Tracy Perez. They explained how the view of this culture has changed through time and how the deaf community has are been included into education. The seminar itself was directed towards helping people understand the deaf culture and the deaf community. The seminar started with Dr. Feldman who is from the department of psychology. Dr. Feldman explained what the deaf culture is and the American Sign Language. From this conference I have learned about the different models of deafness which are medical and cultural. He also explained the negative terms that people associate to the Deaf such as:…

Even though the entire movie was very interesting to watch and exposed very sad facts, there were some parts that stood out from the rest and deeply affected me. Towards the very end of the movie where one of the participants who had a colored ribbon on admitted that even though he was not happy with the way that his equals were being treated, he still choose to remain quite because he did not want to be picked on afterwards and simply became the part of the racist act by allowing that to happen.…

I really liked this article and the resources it gave me. I didn’t know too much about deaf culture and especially not what that has to do with the classroom setting. Currently, I’m taking a beginners sign language course so I thought I could blend the two areas together and learn a bit more. My eyes were open to how small of a group the rural deaf community is and how much the children have to struggle being understood in their classes. My only…

Overall I really enjoyed the movie. I liked the message of the film; it hit all the points that it needed to hit about social injustices. Something I never knew was that they were the first black college to face and defeat Harvard. I never realized how racist America really was back then and how people got away with doing that stuff. The only problem I had with the movie was how they protrayed southern white males. They made us look so stupid with everything we did. I mean I know we weren’t the smartest people in the world but they didn’t have to…

The line that caught my attention the most is “ Everyday I worry when will I be free.” We are all in prisoned in one way or another. Trap in our own world full of cruelty and despair, wondering when will we be set free. But what we don’t see is that we aren’t alone, all of the people in the world are experiencing what we are experiencing. All people no matter what race have something in common. The teens didn’t get that at first, they thought their world and the life they’re trying so hard to fight for just so they can live another day is the burden they themselves only face. In the movie they found that they can fight together and they aren’t alone anymore.…

Going back in time to see how much little knowledge I have about the deaf culture is insane to think about. Everything that I have learned throughout this journey has made me a more opened minded person. I wouldn't say that it's just about learning a different/second language, unlike how most schools teach languages, you get to learn about the culture, history, and the people. I personally have enjoyed this experience mostly due to the fact that it is very inspiring. I am glad I have made this decision and am following this path into the American Sign Language world.…
