Three Most Powerful Men in Computer Business

The computer industry now has become one of the biggest since the 1950s, where everybody could not afford a computer, and believed that it was only for the rich and famous. Today, if you don’t own a computer you would be considered as old fashioned or unfortunate. Computers have dominated the world, having one is essential. Particular students would chose to write their term papers on actual paper, but now professors are requesting students to bring it in typed format. We have seen great advancement in these fields, but who are responsible for these actions? These three men are Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Michael Dell. Some might disagree, but they are one of the most powerful men in the world of computer business.

The leading, and one of the most powerful men in the computer world is considered to be Steve Jobs. Brownlee (2010) stated that Steve Jobs is ranked 17th as the most powerful person in the world. Of course 17 is not a very high position but a leap from 57th to 17th in one year is fairly large. The man co-founded Apple Inc. along with Steve Wozniac. The company Pixar, where all the greatest animation films were produced, such as “Finding Nemo” and “Monsters Inc.” was founded by none other than Steve Jobs himself. The man, being an inspiring leader and a great inventor, changed the way we use the computers and view movies today.

The name Bill Gates always accommodates with the term “Microsoft”. The next thing that comes to mind when we hear his name we think of the richest person on earth. What did he do to earn all that wealth? The simple answer for that is to look at your computer. He did not invent the computer, but more of how you use it; in short he created “Windows”. The most widely used operating system in the world, or about 93% of people who own a computer (Vermaat & Shelly 2010, p.412). It comes as no surprise for most that Bill Gates is included as one of the most powerful men in business.

Michael Dell did not create an operating system, but more of the computer that is affordable to all mankind. The name of his company is not hard to guess, all we have to look is at his last name “Dell”. It’s one of the most famous companies that sell personal computers (PC). A company that started with $1,000 in investment, and probably succeeded so well because of Dell’s believed of working with the customers (Dell Inc. 2010). He is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dell Inc., he is one of the youngest CEO on Fortunes 500 ranking ever (Dell 2010).

When most people here the word ‘apple’ we don’t think of the fruit, but more of the latest iPhone or the new iPad. It’s astounding what Steve Jobs is not dominating in, where as it is computers or telecommunication. The man created the first graphical user interface (GUI) computer and basically set a standard for computers everywhere in the world (Schlender 2010). Steve Jobs is named “Most powerful person in business” for 2010 as stated by Schlender (2010) in Fortune 500. To think, it all started in his parents’ garage, where he and Steve Wozniak designed their first computer ‘Apple I’ and thus began their journey (Angelelli 2007). The next few years Steve Jobs kept succeeding with in his company by bringing out new innovations and pleasing his customers, which were more out of universities and schools. Like most companies Apple Inc. soon starts to go down, and the Board of Directors of Apple Inc. releases Steve Jobs from his position as CEO of Apple Inc. Yet, he does not stop there, he later buys Graphics Group Co. from Lucasfilm’s and renames it later to Pixar (2010). The company Pixar signs contract with Disney Inc. to produce a number of animated movies. It was an instant success, with films such as ‘Toy Story’, ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘Up’. Later on Steve Jobs sells Pixar Inc. to Disney Inc. and from then on he becomes Disney’s largest shareholder (Rediff 2006).
