Three Defining Moments in Canadian History
Throughout Canada’s history it has had twenty two Prime Ministers, but some leaders have stood out among others, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada’s longest serving Prime Minister, served Canada through great economic times, poor economic conditions, and the greatest war in history. Lester B. Pearson’s accomplishments during his time in office have become daily activities in today’s society. The vision of Pierre Elliot Trudeau has changed how Canada operates both politically and civilly. It is through the political influences of William Lyon Mackenzie King, Lester B. Pearson, and Pierre Elliot Trudeau that Canada has witnessed three great defining moments in its history.

William Lyon Mackenzie King is not only the longest serving Prime Minister of Canada, but also the longest serving English leader in the world and his accomplishments gave Canada a sense of nationalism. Canada was a colony of the British Empire and they made all of Canada’s laws, until in 1931 when King helped pass the Statue of Westminster law. This law gave complete independence to all the British Colonies and they only had to obey to laws that were their own. It also gave Canadians a sense of pride since now they had more control over its laws and Britain was less of a factor for Canada regarding its laws. Being a student of history, King knew that conscription in World War One had created feuds between the English and French Canadians and he wouldn’t let World War Two start a war between his own men. So during WWII King had developed his unique method of recruiting troops for overseas battles, he called it “Not necessarily conscription, but conscription if necessary.” This confusing statement pleased both the French and English, since it suited both of their needs.
