This is an essay on the person who has influenced my life the most. It is titled "The Ideal Woman".
A Woman of Strength

Beauty, patience, and strength; these words come to mind when thinking of the ideal woman. My grandmother, Jerri Self, exemplified these characteristics. If you had had the opportunity to meet her, the first thing you would have noticed would have been her striking physical beauty. She had short-sandy blonde hair and beautiful deep green eyes. Her smile was radiant, and her nose was very distinct in that it was elongated with a small hump in the middle.

After talking with my grandmother you would have noticed that more than physical appearance, however, she possessed an inner beauty. She had an outgoing personality, and people were drawn to her because of it. One thing about her that stands out in my mind is her laugh. Her laugh was contagious, and when she laughed you couldn't help laughing with her.

My grandmother was also a very patient woman. I remember one time when my sister and I were spending the night with our grandparents; our grandfather helped us catch some toads. Later that night, after we all got in the bed, I started having nightmares and hallucinations that the toads were jumping around in the bed. I remember thinking that one was on my sister. Of course I started screaming, so my grandmother came into the room to see what was wrong. She talked to me and tried to explain to me that there were no toads in the room. I finally calmed down, so she left the room to go back to sleep. Soon after she left I saw the toads again. When I started screaming the second time, she decided to come sleep in the room with me so that I would be able to get to sleep. Even though I thought the toads were still there, her presence made me feel safe. I am very thankful for her tranquility.

What I remember and admire most about her is her strength. In 1985, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. That same year she decided to have a mastectomy. Her cancer went into remission from 1985-1989. In 1989, her cancer returned. By the time the

“That is the best part of beauty, which a picture cannot express,” Francis Bacon observes in his “Essay on the Subject.” And yet for centuries, we’ve attempted again and again to define beauty from social, cultural and religious perspectives. But in spite of establishing numerous theoretical definition, we continue to try for a substantial, solid and material structure to define women’s beauty. “Attitudes toward beauty are entwined with our deepest conflicts surrounding flesh and spirit,” Harvard’s Nancy Etcoff wrote in her article, “Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty.” Indeed, “beauty is a complex beast surrounded by our equally complex attitudes”, and “The Myth of the Latin…

1 In the essay "A Brother's Murder," Brent Staples writes about his younger brother, Blake, who took a very different path in life than Staples did. 2 The essay starts with a phone call in which Staples learns that Blake has been murdered, shot six times by a former friend (517). The essay goes on to tell about the conditions in which Blake grew up. The neighborhood in which the brothers lived was violent, and young men grew into dangerous adults. Staples recalls a conversation he overheard there between two Vietnam veterans, in which one of them said how much he preferred to fight with young men from the inner city, who wear "their manhood on their sleeves." They weren't afraid to fight, believing that violence proved they were real men (518).…

She taught me that even though when sometimes everything is going wrong, that you need to keep your head up and keep moving forward. She lost her parents, but stayed strong. She was caught two times by the Nazis, and escaped with her family’s help. She was caught a last time, and this time, she was bound to die. While in the tunnel, she could hear the screams of the Jews getting tortured, but managed to persevere and make it out alive. I believe that is important to not give up, as well as keep moving forward even when times get rough. Nothing lasts forever, and that applies to harsh feelings as well. Everyone should remember that if you put bad things in the past, it’ll be forgotten…

I have chosen to write about the comparison between the cultures that produced the Venus de Willendorf with the culture that produces the Barbie doll. While writing about the two cultures, I will describe some common themes the Paleolithic culture and the modern culture share; what our modern culture has adopted and those things it has rejected of which the Paleolithic culture held to high standards. Most important through my writing I will show you how much our world views have changed from the era of the Venus de Willendorf to the modern world view of what the ideal woman should look like and how the view of beauty should not be as superficial as the modern culture makes it out to be.…
