Art is not limited to beauty, what pleases ones eyes, nor to what can only be understood by the majority. II. Analysis
“ A true artist does not create his art with an audience in mind, he creates it to express himself.” Do not expect that all artistic expression should be adjusted to fit the understanding or taste of everybody. He should not be judged for his work. He has his own point of view, his own belief, and his own perception of things. The way he looks and perceives the world, be it religion or any other thing, is different from all of us. An artist has his own right to express his views and we are not in the position to judge and manipulate, most especially without knowing the essence and the true meaning behind ones creation. So do not expect that all artistic expression should be adjusted to fit the understanding or taste of everybody. That is simply being dictatorial. Hence, we live in a democratic country, which give artists the freedom to interpret and express themselves in their own way.
A freelance Filipino artist, by the name of Mideo M. Cruz, shocked the society with his artworks in the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP). His artworks compromised of a sculpture of Jesus with a red nose like that of a clown, a crucifix with a condom and a picture of Jesus Christ with the “private part of a male” nailed on his head with a rosary dangling from it.
A lot, most especially the Christian and Catholics, were offended. They felt that their religion was scandalized and desecrated. The former First Lady Imelda Marcos found it offending after seeing Mideo’s works. She called the exhibit “shameful”. Even the President, Ninoy Aquino, had his own say on the works of Mideo.
