Using a client server system makes managing and securing networks easier than using a peer-to-peer system. Its dedicated servers function as a centralized management system in controlling all the network's activities. Other People Are Reading

• [pic]What Are the Functions of Client & Server Computers on a Network? • [pic]Components of Client/Server Systems

1. Components

o A client server system including servers and workstations, also known as clients. Workstations are the user computers within the network, while the servers are designated to perform specific functions. File servers hold all the network's files. Application servers contain all the programs. Mail servers are responsible for emails moving into and out of the network. Security servers protect the network from unauthorized intrusion or hacking. These devices include proxy servers, firewall servers and anti-virus servers.

Advantages

o Aside from having a centralized method for managing the network, a client server system allows flexibility and scalability. When one component goes down, it is easier to replace it because backups and security methods are in place to accommodate disruption and changes. If a network is growing, it is easy to add more computers and adapt to new technologies because transitioning the entire network can be accomplished through the centralized management system.

Disadvantages

o For small networks, a client server system can be disadvantageous because it is more expensive than a peer-to-peer system. A peer-to-peer system does not require dedicated servers and more sophisticated programs in managing the network. Also, a client server system is heavily dependent on servers for running the network. Once the servers are down, the network goes down as well.
