In1680 Daniel Defoe toured through Britain and noted down the standard of living and the social and technological development at that time. In 1722 he wrote ‘Tour thro’ the Whole Island of Great Britain, divided into circuits or journies’ in which he recorded that there was very little change across the whole country. It was then, at the beginning of the 18th Century that the bore the start of the Industrial Revolution. As a result of the demands from agriculture there was a steady incline of inventions and technological developments. Initially the cottage industry introduced the first factory machine, ran by a water wheel that drove the machinery above it. However, the Great Fire of London 1666 had a dramatic effect on London, forcing the rebuild of an entire city. From 1720 till 1775 migration from farms and country into the city was substantial as there was work now available in the city in which peasants were to be called ‘workers’ and create a working class of people. It was also during this time that classes of people were identified, upper class included the richest of people, politicians and Whigs, middle class consisted of the merchants that had been in control of the supply from rural to urban prior to the move, the working class was what was previously known as peasants that worked for the merchants and a final class identified as the underclass were those such as criminals, beggars and gypsies. The influx of people from rural to urban cause a huge growth in population, meaning that there was too many people in the cities and therefore caused a simultaneous increase in poverty. During this time the church was a significant part of people’s lives and provided outdoor relief for those that were really poor, this included providing food and water and on special occasion the parish church may provide minimal amounts of money.
