Thesis: A team is comprised by a group of people or animals that are linked in a common purpose.
Preview: Becoming a therapy dog team is different than a service dog, involves a bit of work and tests to get certified beforehand but the effort is well worth it in the end with all the places you can go and smiles you can bring.
Main points:
Difference between therapy and service dog: A common misconception….
Service Dogs assist disabled people by retrieving objects that are out of their reach, by pulling wheelchairs, opening and closing doors, turning light switches off and on, barking for alert, finding another person, providing balance and counterbalance and many other individual tasks as needed by a disabled person.
Therapy Dog refers to a dog trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, mental institutions, schools, and stressful situations such as disaster areas.
Therapy Dogs are to be petted, and vests cut down on the petting area. Service dogs wear vest because they are not supposed to be petted.
TRANSITION: Now even though therapy dogs are more friendly and easy to get along with, they still have to pass many tests to be certified. Therapy Dogs International has what they call the TDI test which has to be conducted by a registered evaluator.
The TDI Test is divided into two phases and has 13 individual testing exercises.
Phase I
Begins with testing of all of the applicants in a group, excluding the part where the dog will be handled by a stranger out of sight of the handler. The dogs must permit the evaluator to check the collar, all 4 paws, ears and tail which must be lifted if applicable
Phase II
The dog will be tested on an individual basis, must sit, listen, stay, leave food on ground, not get startled or aggressive. My mom said with their test she had to go down a hall with someone vacumming as a test. Also for the hospital at CHOP she had to wait in the
