Theorist: Nola Pender Interview
Maryville University

We, as group 3, have chosen Nola Pender to Interview. She is a very busy women but has surprisingly made time for us. She has agreed to sit down with us and allow us to ask her a few questions, which we are sure she has answered many times before. When she arrived we were impressed, and felt a little underdressed, when she walked in in her blue business suite and hair obviously just fixed from the beautician. We started her interview with some fairly basic questions. They are as follows, what led you to nursing? What is your education background? This question made us feel like our work on our Master’s was kindergarten work. She is a very well educated women. We also asked, how many articles and books she has written. And how many awards she has received for her work. We were also very curious if she has experienced any gender bias during her work as a researcher? After those more simple questions, we jumped into the nit and gritty of why we wanted to talk with her in the first place, her theory. We want to know about her Health Promotion Model. We asked her exactly, “What is the Health Promotion Model?” We were taken back by the amount of thought and information that went into her theory. While answering that very broad question, one of the things she told us was that the patient’s and the nurse’s background were both vital to the success of the Health Promotion Model, so we asked her, “Why?” She also explained that self-perception was extremely important, so again we asked her, “why?” As we were so excited and over enjoyed with learning so much from such an influential person in nursing, she sat very calmly and answered each question very slow and deliberate with a kind smile on her face. We all learned so much from Nola Pender and were so appreciative of her to share her time with us.

Jane Doe called me on the phone one day while I was at the Community Center working at the help desk. We set up the initial interview for the following day. When Jane first arrives for the interview I will provide a description of the services available and that I can provide her. I will explain to her that I am certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as of May 2012 and I have completed an Essentials of Personal Training class for credit at Northern Michigan University. I will explain to her the mission statement of the Community Center (mission statement of NSCA is to unify members and facilitate a professional exchange of ideas in strength development as it relates to the improvements of athletic performance and fitness) unique features to the program, and where and when services are available. I will then need to evaluate her readiness for fitness by assessing her level of motivation and commitment. Initially he obtained his Bachelors in Pre-Med from Florida Southern and began by volunteering in the emergency room. While volunteering, he discovered that he didn’t want to become a doctor, so he decided to go to nursing school and obtain his registered nurse license. After working at Lakeland Regional Hospital for a little bit, he decided he wanted to posses a wider range of privileges and went back to school to obtain his Masters in nursing. I chose to interview my friend Samantha that completed her schooling last year as a registered nurse. She completed her associate's degree in nursing at our local community college and it took her approximately 3 years to achieve. While in school she did both classwork and also clinical training. Her clinical training was done at a hospital and also at a nursing facility, this was to further her experience with hands on practice while being observed and supervised. To obtain her license she had to pass all her classwork and clinical training, once this was achieved she then had to pass the required NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse) to obtain her license. She currently works at a hospital in our state but also at a hospital in another state, to do this she had to take that states NCLEX-RN before she was eligible to work in it. Both of the hospitals have similar job duties that she performs on a regular basis. They include direct and indirect patient care such as safety, personal hygiene, administering medications, filling out paperwork and setting up the schedules for her subordinates. Depending on the patients she may also have to do skin tests and draw blood for labs. There are times where she has to take action and change the treatment as she finds needed without the approval of the lead Physician, as she works the overnight shift they are rarely on duty when she is. Her primary responsibility is to maintain the health and safety of all her patients, which can be hard when the hospitals are understaffed and full of patients that are in need of constant medical care. She is also continuing her education to become a Nurse Practitioner, she is unsure if she will like it or not but knows that the salary difference is enough to continue her…
