Social Constructivist Model of Learning
The seeds of constructivist ideas of learning have their roots in Piaget’s work. Piaget called the growing child a lone scientist means a child is alone who explored the world and find out conclusions. social constructivism gives an important dimension to constructivist ideas. In social constructivist model of learning the more emphasis are given on interaction between child and others. The two main persons who are associated with social constructivist model of learning are Lev Vygotsky who wrote his theory in earlier twentieth century but his work was undiscovered in west until 1960 but later an American psychologist Jerome Bruner carried out his work in late twentieth century. Gallagher(1999) Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky was born in Russia in 1896. He got his law degree from University of Moscow in 1917. He worked with different psychologists and began Vygotskian approach to psychology. He was died in 1934 due to tuberculosis. Vygotsky research hoe children solve their problems led him to invent Zone of Proximal Development theory for which Vygotsky is most famous for. social constructivism theory says that interaction with people plays an important role in development of a child. Vygotsky believed that social interaction changes the child's thought and behaviour. Child will gain changes in their thought and behaviour by interacting with more knowledgeable people. Their are four main basic principles of social constructivist theory: a) Language plays an important role in cognitive development of the child means dialogues are essential with the help of which ideas comes into mind and shared with other people. b) Development can be the result of learning means learning under social constructivist theory results in development of thought and behaviour of a child. c) Knowledge is constructed by children means with the help of social interaction children develop their own knowledge. d) Development can't be...
