Cat, Dog:

One theme of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is power. McMurphy and nurse Ratchet kind of fight back and forth, for the power of the patients. For example, when McMurphy wants to watch the baseball game and nurse Ratchet made the patients vote, saying that majority would win. Nurse Ratchet new that she had enough power that the patients would not vote with McMurphy, simply because they didn’t have the heart to stand up for what they wanted, and was scared of nurse Ratchet. Next, McMurphy challenges her again and he still did not when in votes, however he regains power by started to act out what he thinks the baseball game is like. Him and the other patients holler and scream the plays out. In doing so the agitate nurse Ratchet and she loses control over the ward and the patients.

Another example is when McMurphy doesn’t want to take his medication because he doesn’t know what it is he has to take, so in response nurse Ratchet states; “ If Mr. McMurphy doesn’t want to take his medication orally, I am sure we can arrange that he can have it some other way, but ii don’t think you’d like it”. McMurphy response by proceeding to act as if he is consuming the medication but really he kept in his mouth until he got to the other side of the room. He then jokes about it to the other patients. Another character asks McMurphy why he didn’t tell her to go “F herself”. He states basically because he didn’t take the medication and spits it into the other guy’s hair jokingly.
