Theme and Narrative Elements in the Short Story
Theme
I will demonstrate my understanding of literary terms by using the short story called, “Country Lovers”. The theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story. The theme of this short story is how a young white boy named Paulus Eyesendyck and a young black girl named Thebedi growing up fell in love. At the time they were growing up in South Africa, where there was a strong socioeconomic system called apartheid that oppressed the majority of the black people (Clugston, 2010). This made it forbidden for blacks and white to be in love or in any kind of physical relationship (Clugston, 2010). This story of forbidden love on a South African farm started out so innocent and ended up so tragic. System called apartheid that oppressed the majority of the black people (Clugston, 2010). This made it forbidden for blacks and white to be in love or in any kind of physical relationship. In the black communities, mutilated, broken, or otherwise abused bodies became a common sight after 1976, when South Africa was torn apart by the violent actions of the police and the antiapartheid insurgency. In art of the period, the human figure was often put through animal transformations that indicated how this everyday brutality of apartheid was internalized and how it might be exorcised (Peffer, 2009). It was a very hard time for black people from 1949 to 1994 not to mention the shame that Paulus would have bought to his family for being with a black girl.
