“All kins a vegtable in the garden, and if we want a little whiskey we can sell a few eggs or something, or some milk.” The speaker of this quote is George who explains the workers dream and how free and relaxed he could live if he owned his own ranch. The book is called Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The novel is about two migrant workers who travel to find work. It also shows the challenges they face like lonliness and the hopes they have of owning their oen ranch one day. The theme the essay is describing is the dream of owning a ranch between three characters. The three characters that represent the dream are George, lennie, and candy. George has a dream to own his own ranch so he can become his own boss. “I could go get a job an work, an no trouble, no mess at all…” George explains how easy and great his life would be if he didn’t have lennie around and he wasn’t a ranch worker anymore. “OK someday- we’re gonna get the jack together and were gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an a cow…” George sits and thinks about his dream and how great it would be to own his own ranch. Accomplishing this dream would give George independence and make him a “somebody”. Georges dream to own a ranch would make him his own boss, have independence, and make him become a “somebody”. Not only does George have a dream of owning his own ranch but lennie also shares the same dream. “An live off the fatta the lan…” To lennie the dream of owning his own ranch is more about owning animals he likes to pet like rabbits.
