The play ‘100’ was written by Diene Petterle, Neil Monaghan and Christopher Heimann collaboratively in 2003 in Great Britain. The play first premiered on August 2002 in Edinburgh. The play revolves around a void where five people from the previous life, gather to select a memory from that life in which they will move on to live in over and over again. A guide will aid them in the process and whoever fails to choose a memory within the time limit will become the next guide by default for the next batch of people. The theme of the play is life and death. The writers shared in the book that they were intrigued by “Magical Realism” and inspired by the how reality and fantasy blend seamlessly. Since the void is an imaginative space, they believed that the magic lies in the audience and whether or not they choose to believe what they see. This triggered my concept idea for ‘100’, I have decided to use ‘Deception in magic’ as the main source of inspiration for this proposal.
Firstly, the guide will be portrayed as a magician who will be assisted with four other magicians. A magician creates an illusion for his audience and therefore is the only one free from deception. The guide can see through all the memories and is therefore set apart from the four other characters because he is the only one not being deceived. When the four characters look back at their memories, they realized that they were being deceived into believing something apart from the truth. Ketu grew up believing whatever theories the villagers had proposed to be the truth. Alex thought he had it all in his head. Sophie thought she knew what she wanted. Nia thought all she needed was someone to love and that everything will be taken care of. I also plan to use holy theatre to compliment my theme of magic since magic itself is very ritualistic.
