The Weights of Discarded Garbage

My original research was on the Tucson Garbage Project, which was a study done in 1973 by Dr.
William Rathje in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Rathje, also known as “Captain Planet” and the students from the University of Arizona studied the waste from Tucson residents in order to examine patterns of consumption.
My original paper referred to a comparative analysis of the amount of discarded waste from one week. The purpose of the study was to determine if paper is the most discarded item of garbage given random samples of two person households. The results can be used to make determinations based on the data supplied.

My original Null Hypothesis: Paper is not the most discarded item of garbage in one week.
My original Alternate Hypothesis: Based on our data, paper is the most discarded item of garbage in one week.

In November, 2009, the Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted a study on the Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling and Disposal in the United States. This data was analyzed from 1960 to 2008 in thousands of tons. It was broken down by year and also by categories. Based on this data, discarded plastic has a mean of 34.53%. Referencing back to the discarded trash table, the amount of plastic discarded in one week has a mean of 1.12, while paper has a mean of 6.89. Based on the data supplied, Paper is the highest discarded item of trash in one week, followed by food, glass, metal, plastic, yard items, and finally textiles with a mean of .28. Based on the research data we can conclude that paper is the most discarded item of waste in one week.

Project Part II gave me some experience in researching a few specific types of data and gave me some practice in comparing data sets and achieving results based on these observations. Based on feedback from Dr. Tonjes I needed a more direct hypothesis to prove or disprove and I

When I originally saw the title of the article, I immediately had an idea that the selection was going to be a sob story about how someone became a dumpster diver. To my surprise, there was so much more to this than I thought. Lars Eighner, to me, had a sense of adventure to “scavenging”. It was fascinating to him to “acquire many things from the dumpsters.” He categorized things in an advanced system that reminded me of a computer filing system. No matter how sophisticated a system is, there is always an error. No matter how careful Eighner was he would “contract dysentery at least once a month.” If the categories were not enough, he implicated different sectors society for being overly wasteful. He implicates college students for wasting…

Out of 40 people observed only 7 people left trash and 4 of them sat together. I feel like our sample size was too small and we did not observe enough littering to have a statistically significant finding. To improve our experiment, it should be tried again but instead of one hour of observation, maybe it should be increased to an hour or two a day over a week’s span, or multiple locations to make it more generalizable. Because of social loafing, where members of a group have a tendency to exert less effort than if working alone under the assumption that others will pick up their slack or cover them, we thought that people would leave trash behind when in a group. Although this was the case at one table, for the most part everyone picked up their trash when they…

Before this fieldtrip to Lee County Solid Waste Facility, I lacked knowledge regarding the fate of our trash. My idea of a waste facility went along the lines of a big dump site or landfill; contrarily, I am familiar with what items are deemed recyclable in Lee County. My experience at the Lee County Solid Waste Facility, operated by Covanta, showed me how garbage has the potential to provide electrical power to over 250,000 homes. Waste to Energy is a primary example of how America can become more sustainable and produce less heaping landfills. Carrying around a trash bag made me conscientious of how much trash I accumulated.…

The amount of trash littered each year is getting closer every year to the amount of trash that was actually properly disposed of and billions of dollars have been spent cleaning it up and remedying the environmental problems caused by litter. The most common type of litter is cigarette butts, carelessly flicked onto the ground by smokers. What the people guilty of these crimes do not realize is that these butts take about five years break down, thus the result of just one thoughtless action can be apparent for years to come. The largest volume of a single category of littered item is beverage containers. This can be attributed to the fact that our world is steadily becoming all about convenience at all costs. Other top trash articles found in undesirable places are wrappers, aluminum cans, gum/gum wrappers, caps, lids, plastic bags, and advertisements and other paper items.…
