Value of Leadership
Most companies understand the importance good leadership is to manage an organization successfully. But why, why do we need good leaders? Why is good leadership essential for managing an organization or even an entire business? What is leadership anyway? When leaders fail? And most important of all, how can the performances of a leader or the leadership performance proper evaluated and assessed? This paper will interpret briefly what the value of leadership means to the management of organizations and tries to point out differences in these models and problems of applying them in reality. First of all though, it is necessary to know what both leadership and management are. 1. Leadership: Leadership has been described as “influence, that is, the art or process of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals.” [Koontz and Weihrich, 2005]. 2. Management: Management has been described as “the process designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals, working together in groups, efficiently accomplish selected aims.” [Koontz and Weihrich, 2005].

Organizations are established and structured to achieve defined objectives. Herein certain positions and tasks make up the work structure and form a basis for the appointment of a leader with the authority attached to this position. A leader’s personal qualities, the demands of the situation, or a combination of these and other factors are the basis of successful or unsuccessful achievements of an organizations objective. In many cases, leaders fail when focusing on the day-today operations and lacking visual of the organization as a whole. Recently a Wired article talked about how Google has failed to respond appropriately to rise of Facebook and other social networking sites.
